TURLOCK — Down zero-games-to-two, the Warriors did not let that spook them as they rallied all the way back to beat visiting Cal State East Bay in five sets on Halloween night.
Lianne Vicchio and
Andrea Fett both had career highs in kills as Cal State Stanislaus picked up a California Collegiate Athletic Association win and improved to 9-17 overall and 3-15 in the CCAA after an exciting 13-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-16, 16-14 victory.
Vicchio had 20 kills and Fett added 16 kills while freshman setter
Jessica Lehner recorded 40 assists, one shy of a career-best.
Vicchio also had 14 digs, Lehner with 15 digs and four block-assists and
Amanda Pielstick led all players with 16 digs. The Warriors out-blocked East Bay 21-7 in total blocks.
Melissa Bishop had seven block-assists.
Cal State East Bay was led by Sukhjit Athwal with 16 kills and Ariel Ajagu added 14, but the Pioneers fall to 8-17 overall and 6-11 in their first season of conference play.
It was CSUEB that gave Stanislaus the early scare as the Pioneers rolled up to an 8-0 lead as they cruised to a 25-13 first set win.
Cal State Stanislaus took an early 5-0 lead in the second until CSUEB turned it into a see-saw battle. After CSUS got within a point on an East Bay attacking error at 23-22, the Pioneers scored two straight points that ended on one of Athwal's kills.
It was another tight-battle in the third with no-one leading by more than three points. Facing game-point at 24-23, Warrior sophomore
Victoria Costa made her only kill of the match count to keep Stanislaus alive. The two teams traded points until
Janay Bankston gave CSUS a 26-25 and CSUEB's attack by Cara Crowder went long to allow the Warriors stretch the match to a fourth game.
Stanislaus took advantage of the momentum swing and dominated the fourth set, rolling off to the 25-16 win with solid attacking led by Vicchio and Fett. At the same time, CSUEB committed 14 attacking errors to allow the Warriors to even the score.
In the fifth, East Bay jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but again the Warriors battled back. Several lead changes and five ties later, the Warriors caught a break with a bad set by CSUEB's Roxanne Neely to set-up match point.
Lehner set up Fett nicely on the right side and her cross-court shot was not played by the Pionners for the final point and Warrior victory.
Cal State Stanislaus will wrap-up its home season next weekend with matches against Humboldt State and Sonoma State.
