SAN FRANCISCO — It was better late than never for the Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team on Sunday as a late Lisa Garcia goal lifted the Warriors over San Francisco State, 1-0, in the season finale.

Garcia scored her 11th goal of the season at 82:58 to help Stanislaus finish the 2009 campaign with 10-9-1 overall record, making it the program's eighth winning season in the last nine years. The Warriors were 6-9-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

"This was a good way to end the season. SF State is a very hard place to play because they are tough and physical and the surface is a challenge," Warriors head coach Gabriel Bolton said. "We were very determined to play quality soccer but also be tough and physical. We accomplished both."

San Francisco State, last year's North Division winner, finished at 8-8-4 overall and 6-7-3 in the CCAA.

With 11 goals, Garcia set a new school record with goals in the season, surpassing Marti Teunissen who had 10 in 2005. Garcia also finished the year with 27 points, which tied Teunissen's 2005 total. Both Garcia and Teunissen are from Manteca's Sierra High School.

The goal, Garcia's fifth game-winning-goal of the season, was assisted by Apryl Whitney on a centering pass from the left side on a breakaway. Garcia shot it in from 10-yards out to break a scoreless tie. There weren't a lot of offense from both sides in the match with CSUS having a slight 5-to-4 shots advantage.

"We are very excited that Lisa broke the school record. It was a typical Lisa goal," Bolton said. "Lisa is great at running off the ball. She just has a knack for getting in behind the defense. Of course she also has the skill to finish."

Garcia entered Sunday's play tied for first in the CCAA in goals scored this season with Cal State L.A.'s Alex Conley. Conley did not score in LA's 2-0 win over Cal State East Bay.

CSUS goalkeeper Jessica Sitarz, playing in her final collegiate contest, was really only challenged once. She faced four shots with two on frame and she saved both attempts.

"She made a brilliant save in the first half to keep the shutout. It was clutch," Bolton added.

Sitarz completed her four-year career at Stanislaus ranked second in every career record category including, 17 shutouts and 308 saves.

Sunday's shutout was the Warriors' ninth shutout of the season.

The Warriors had to overcome some challenges during the day en route to San Francisco for the match. The chartered bus carrying both the men's and women's soccer teams broke down. A second bus was sent to take the teams to the SFSU campus, but the start time for the men's match was delayed by nearly an hour.
