Gaumnitz becomes strikeout leader

TURLOCK — It was some of the familiar names that have been associated with the Cal State Stanislaus softball program providing the arms and bats as the 14th-ranked Warriors started the new season 2-0 on Sunday at Warrior Softball Field.

Jessica Gaumnitz became Cal State Stanislaus' all-time strikeout leader in the opener as the Warriors blanked Chico State, 4-0. In the nightcap of a three-team tripleheader, the Cal State Stanislaus offense scattered 10 hits in routing Academy of Art, 9-2.

Gaumnitz recorded five strikeouts on the day, and with 385 career strikeouts, the senior hurler became the Stanislaus strikeout queen. She surpassed the previous mark of 382 previously held by Jenny Brown (1998-2001).

Gaumnitz was nearly untouchable against the Wildcats, allowing just an infield hit and a soft liner to left in the second inning. Between hitting a batter with one out in the third and a leadoff walk in the seventh, Gaumnitz retired 11 consecutive batters en route to her first win of the season. She struck out five, walked one and gave up two hits in the 2009 debut.

"(Gaumnitz) is J. She pitched well. She's just a great pitcher," Warrior head coach Jan Schefkowitz said. "We played cleaned defensively and were patient at the plate and put together a big inning."

The Warriors scored four runs in the bottom of the second for the game's only scores. Jennie Arnold started the rally with an one-out triple to right and Kimiko Wright won an 11-pitch battle with Chico starter Lauren Walker with a two-run single to left to highlight the inning. Hailey Torba also doubled in two runs to cap the four-run rally.

In the second game, against first-year program Academy of Art, Arnold went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs and Meghan Franksen was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Torba, a sophomore from Turlock, had a triple and drove in two scores to also account for the Stanislaus offense.

Arnold picked up the win in the circle, going six strong innings and allowed two runs on three hits. Stacey Hains struck out two batters in the seventh to finish off the Urban Knights.

In the early game between Chico State and Academy of Art, Gwen Cox singled to right to score Charlotte Honciano in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Wildcats over the Urban Knights, 2-1.
