TURLOCK -- Wet and rainy weather did not put a damper on the Cal State Stanislaus baseball team's mood Friday. Behind two stellar pitching performances, the Warriors swept their third-straight doubleheader by beating Central Washington, 6-0 and 5-1, at Warrior Field.
The wins are the Warriors' fifth and sixth-straight wins, moving their record to 6-1 overall. The Wildcats, who were playing in their season opening games, fall to 0-2. The Warriors move to 36-33 all-time against the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, and 11-8 versus Central Washington.
Spencer Snodgrass went the distance in game one, throwing nine innings of shutout ball while scattering three hits, walking none and striking out five, all in just 82 pitches. After a rocky debut last weekend against St. Martin's, Snodgrass dropped his ERA from 6.75 to 2.51 while earning his first win as a Warrior.
The Wildcats hurt themselves in game one, as the Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Central Washington starter Derek Shoemaker threw two wild pitches, the first of which advanced
David Contreras to second and the last one which scored Contreras from third. The Wildcats committed a total of four errors in the game, which helped lead to a 4-0 lead for the Warriors after two innings.
The Warriors, ranked No. 30 in the latest Collegiate Baseball poll, got insurance runs in the fourth and seventh innings. Shoemaker took the loss after giving up five runs, all earned, on six hits in six innings of work. He walked five and struck out seven.
Seth Hudson led the way for the Warriors offensively, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks. Jake Thelen went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
In game two it was
Dakota Watts' turn, and he began the game working as efficiently as Snodgrass had, but the Wildcats finally got to him in the fourth. A.J. Gosney led off the inning with a single then stole second, his second stolen base of the game. Two outs later, catcher Andrew Snowdon drove in the Wildcats' only run of the day with an RBI single to give Central Washington a 1-0 lead.
Cal State Stanislaus went on the comeback path for the second time this season, scoring two runs on an RBI double by
Chase Perez in the bottom of the fourth. Perez hit a high fly ball to center field that ironically was lost in the sun by Gosney after all the rain Friday morning, scoring
Jake Oketani and
Leandro Dottavio. The Warriors took a 2-1 lead and added more later.
Watts was relieved by
Tony Smith in the fifth inning after getting into some trouble with one out, but Smith enduced a doubleplay by forcing Danny Myers to pop up softly to
Ryan Silver at second base, who turned around and doubled up Snowdon at first.
Joseph Pilatti, who came into the game as a pinch hitter and singled on the first pitch he saw, hit his second homerun of the season in the sixth inning, a two-run shot to center field, to give the Warriors some insurance.
Watts picked up the win, his second of the season, with 5 1/3 innings pitched, five strikeouts and just two hits. Pilatti was 2-for-2 with a homerun, two RBIs and a run scored, and Perez was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.
Alex Zanini was 1-for-2 with a triple and a run scored. For the Wildcats, Gosney was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases.
The series between Cal State Stanislaus and Central Washington continues at 11 a.m. Saturday with another doubleheader.
