ARCATA -- Against one of the best teams in the West Region at one of the toughest venues in the conference, the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team almost came away with the season's biggest upset.
After leading almost the entire way, the Warriors dropped a heart-breaker to CCAA-leading Humboldt State, 65-63, when Kevin Atkins converted on a three-point play with 12 seconds left to help HSU to the come-from-behind win.
Cal State Stanislaus, led by as many as 15 points six and a half minutes into the second half, drops to 6-14 overall and 2-13 in the CCAA. Humboldt State (18-7) remains in a first place tie with Cal State San Bernardino at 11-4 in conference play.
Humboldt State is ranked No. 5 in the West Region in the current poll.
Michael Dyson had a huge night for the Warriors with 27 points and seven rebounds. The senior center was 11-for-18 from the field.
Benny Koochoie added 17 points.
Matt Ibewiro had eight points and four blocked shots.
Dyson has now led Stanislaus in scoring in four straight games and five of the last six. He has scored 72 points in the last four games.
Five minutes into the game, the Warriors took off in the first half behind Dyson's effective play. Dyson had 19 of his points in the first half as the Warriors led 41-33 at the break. CSUS shot 50 percent from the field and was 9-for-10 from the foul line in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Stanislaus would built its lead to 15 points, 55-40, with a Dyson dunk at 13:24 to play.
But Humboldt State would rally and eventually pull within one at the 1:00 mark on a Owen Newman bucket. After a CSUS timeout and a miss jumper, the Lumberjacks took possession with Atkins driving to the basket and hitting a layup for the HSU lead. Atkins, who was fouled on the play, made his free throw for the final margin.
A last second attempt by Koochoie with two seconds left failed as the Lumberjacks escaped to improve to 11-2 at home.
HSU was led by Atkins who finished with 17 points. Zac Tiedeman added 11 for the Lumberjacks.
