ROHNERT PARK – Not even some Valentine's Day love could help Cal State Stanislaus snap a three-game losing streak and stay in the hunt for a playoff berth, as the Warriors blew another second half double-digit lead Saturday on the road, this time to Sonoma State, losing 62-61, eliminating them from postseason contention.
The Warriors did the inexplicable Saturday, calling a timeout in the final minute when they had already used their allotment and getting a technical foul called on themselves. The Warriors had just regained the lead seconds earlier at 61-60 with two
Michael Dyson free throws. Steven Pratt, an 88 percent foul shooter, stepped to the line and hit both technical free throws to put the Seawolves up 62-61 with 31 seconds left. The Warriors had a last shot opportunity, but a jumper by
Chris Hayes rimmed out.
The Seawolves extend their winning streak to four and strengthen their positioning for a California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament berth at 11-12 overall and 7-9 in the CCAA, good enough for a tie at seventh place. The Warriors fall to 6-15 overall and 2-14 in CCAA play. They are now five games back of the eighth spot in the CCAA Championship tournament with four to play, officially out of contention.
Chris Teevan led the Warriors with a career-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
Benny Koochoie was also in double figures with 13 points and Dyson grabbed game-high honors with 11 rebounds.
After the Seawolves jetted to a 9-4 lead in the first 2 1/2 minutes, Sonoma State embarked on a cold spell that saw them go without a field goal for nearly nine minutes. In the process, the Warriors grabbed an eight-point lead. The Warriors would stay in front for the rest of the half and pushed the lead to as many as 13 in the second half at 51-39 with 13:12 left.
The Seawolves were quick to chip away, going on a 16-5 run over the next six minutes to pull even with 7:05 to play. Sonoma took its first lead of the half on a pair of free throws by Duane Wright with three minutes left that made it 60-59.
Both teams missed shots in the ensuing minute and a half before the Warriors regained the lead when Dyson swished a pair of free throws with a minute and a half remaining.
Though the Seawolves would shoot miserably from the free throw line (54.5 percent), it would be free throws that secured the victory. Sonoma State was 12-of-22 in the game from the charity stripe. Duane Wright poured in 12 points and six rebounds to go along with two assists and two steals. Ben Washington had 10 points and Keith Garner was on top with seven rebounds. Gerred Link guided the offense with five assists.
The Warriors are back in action Friday night when they head down south to face Cal State Dominguez Hills.
