TURLOCK – Saturday's doubleheader between Cal State Stanislaus and St. Martin's at Warrior Field was a tale of two games, as the Warriors and Saints combined for 28 runs and 28 hits in game one, and the two teams' starters battled in a low-scoring affair in game two. The Warriors won both games, 17-11 and 4-0, to notch their first wins of 2009.
The wins move the Warriors' record to 2-1 overall. St. Martin's falls to 0-2. The Warriors are now 30-33 all-time against the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and 8-2 against the Saints, including a 6-0 mark at home.
Leandro Dottavio had a huge game, going 4-for-5 with nine RBIs, tying the Cal State Stanislaus single-game record for RBIs in a game. He hit two homeruns, a triple and drove a go-ahead two-run double to left field in the bottom of the eighth that started a 10-run rally.
The Warriors and Saints both had 14 hits in game one.
Eric Cendejas took the win in relief, while Jeff Brooks took the loss for St. Martin's.
Kyle Loretelli also hit his first homerun of the season, a towering solo shot to right field in the third inning, while going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Jake Oketani went 3-for-4 with four runs scored.
The Warriors could not have jumped on St. Martin's any earlier in game one, as
David Contreras drove the very first pitch he saw over the left-center field wall. The Warriors would get three more unearned runs in the inning to take a 4-0 lead after one.
St. Martin's finally broke through in the fourth inning against Warriors starter
Spencer Snodgrass with three straight hits, breaking up Snodgrass' perfect start. The Saints would get two runs to make the score 5-2. They would repeat the performance in the sixth with three straight hits and two more runs to make the score 5-4 and knock Snodgrass out of the game.
Cal State Stanislaus answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to make their lead 7-4, but the Saints would finally take their first lead of the game with four runs in the top of the eighth to go ahead 8-7. The Warriors answered with a 10-run eighth to go up 17-8, insurance they would need as the Saints added three runs in the ninth for the final score.
In game two, The Warriors'
Dakota Watts and the Saints' Michael McIver went toe to toe for four innings, allowing just five hits between them in those innings and striking out a total of 10 batters in the game. Watts finished with eight strikeouts in six innings for his first win of the season while McIver took the loss after allowing four runs on three hits in the fifth.
The Warriors got things going in the fifth inning of game one with a leadoff single by
Chase Perez, who went 2-for-2 in the game. A walk and then a sacrifice bunt moved two runners into scoring position with one out, and that's when
Zach Cadet struck with a two-run double to left field to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead. They would add two more insurance runs on an RBI triple from Jake Thelen and a sacrifice fly from Loretelli for the final score. Cendejas only needed six pitches to close out the seventh and seal the win for Cal State Stanislaus.
The four-game series with St. Martin's continues at 11 a.m. Sunday with another doubleheader.
