TURLOCK — Sonoma State put together a couple of solid games to sweep host Cal State Stanislaus in California Collegiate Athletic Association softball doubleheader action on Saturday.
Lindsay Emmel again held down the Warriors in game one and the SSU offense scattered enough runs across in the nightcap for the twin bill sweep. Sonoma State, one of the hottest teams in the CCAA, took three of four from Cal State Stanislaus and improved to 18-14 overall and 9-10 in the CCAA. Sonoma State has won both 10 of its last 12 games.
Emmel, who out-dueled CSUS ace
Jessica Gaumnitz on Friday, did it again on Saturday as she went the distance to pick up her second win in as many starts. She gave up two runs on four hits but wasn't nearly as dominant with six strike outs. She struck out 15 in Friday's 11-inning affair. Emmel also picked up a save in game two.
Sonoma State went up 2-0 in the fourth with two singles, a walk and a hit-batter. The second single of the inning drove in pinch runner Nikki Jaime. Cal State Stanislaus tied the game in the fifth on a two-run double by
Erica McIntyre that plated
Kimiko Wright, who had doubled, and
Nikky Rissetto.
In the Sonoma seventh with two on and two outs, the Warriors appeared to have worked out of a jam. Gaumnitz got a grounder to third off the bat of Ashley Sardina that was fielded cleanly by McIntyre, but her throw sailed high to load the bases.
Gaumnitz would hit the following batter to score a run and Simone Brandalise followed with a two-run single to center for a three-run SSU inning. Gaumnitz gave up a total of five runs on seven hits, but only one earned run for the loss to fall to 9-5 on the season.
In the second game, Stanislaus got on the board first in the opening frame with back-to-back doubles by
Brittany Balanesi and
Meghan Franksen. But SSU starter Brittany Williams would retire 11 of the next 12 Warriors while her offense scored twice in the second for the lead they would not relinquish.
With the score at 3-2 in the sixth, Stanislaus would have two on with one out, but Emmel got a strikeout and a come-backer to end the Warrior rally.
McIntyre, who was 1-for-4 in game one and went 2-for-4 in game two with a double, extended her hitting streak to 11 games. Wright and Franksen were the only other Warriors to have two hits on the day.
Cal State Stanislaus dropped to 16-10 and 11-9 in the CCAA and will have a weekend off before hosting Hawaii Hilo on March 31 leading up to the annual Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno at Pedretti Park.
