TURLOCK — Under gusty conditions, the Cal State Stanislaus softball team picked up a doubleheader split against No. 11 Hawaii Pacific on Wednesday.
Behind
Jessica Gaumnitz's two-hitter, the Warriors took game one 3-1 before dropping the second game, 7-0, heading into this weekend's Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno at Pedretti Sports Complex and Warrior Softball Field.
Gaumnitz improved her personal mark to 11-5 with the two-hitter. She gave up just one run in the fourth and struck out seven and walked one to out-duel HPU's Courtney Kessell. Cal State Stanislaus is now 19-11 overall while Hawaii Pacific improved to 28-6.
Windy conditions Wednesday afternoon kept at least three deep fly balls in the first three Stanislaus innings in play. Instead, the two teams went scoreless through three innings. Hawaii Pacific got on the board first in the fourth by scratching together a run. With two outs, Tajia Acierto reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and later scored on a Kozy Toriano single to right.
The Warriors would answer back in the bottom half of the fourth when
Jennifer Arnold singled to left to score
Hailey Torba from second. Torba had reached on an infield pop-up that HPU's infielders circle around, fighting the wind, but wasn't able to catch.
Stanislaus tagged on two runs in the fifth with a rally started by
Kimiko Wright's leadoff single. She then stole second, advanced to third on a sac bunt and scored on a
Erica McIntyre triple to the right-center gap. McIntyre also scored on the play when the HPU shortstop mishandled the relay throw to make it 3-1.
In game two, the Stanislaus defense did not help starter Arnold. Arnold retired the first 10 batters she faced in order and with one out in the fourth, HPU scored three runs on three hits and two errors. HPU would score three more in the fifth on three hits and a costly Warrior error for a 6-0 lead. In the end, of the seven runs HPU scored, only two runs were earned by the CSUS pitchers.
Arnold ended up with the loss, going 4 2/3 innings and allowed a run on six hits.
Stacey Hains pitched the final two-plus innings and gave up a run on three hits.
Against HPU's Sherise Musquiz, the Warriors went down in order through the first 5 1/3 innings. Musquiz improved to 14-2 on the year. She gave up four hits, struck out two and walked one in the complete game. Kessell lost game one and dropped her record to 12-4.
Offensively for the Warriors in game two, Arnold went 1-for-3 with a double and McIntyre singled to reach base for the 21st consecutive game.
Cal State Stanislaus opens play of its own tournament starting on Friday with a 11:15 a.m. game against Grand Canyon. The Warriors will play three games on Friday before two more pool play games on Saturday, which includes a rematch against Hawaii Pacific. Sunday's bracket games are to be determined, pending the outcome of pool play. All Stanislaus' tournament games will be at Pedretti Park.
