TURLOCK -- Sunday the Warriors had to play the catch-up game all afternoon, but they played that game well and were able to come out with two wins, 6-2 and 8-3, over NAIA member Oregon Tech at Warrior Field.
The wins move the Warriors' record to 29-15 overall. The Warriors' close out their regular season nonconference schedule with a 15-2 mark. The Warriors also move their 2009 home record to 23-4. The Oregon Tech Hustlin' Owls, who set their own school record for wins on Saturday, fall to 29-22 on the year.
Game one saw Oregon Tech get on the board with a single run in the third to take a 1-0 lead. The Hustlin' Owls would push across another run in the top of the fifth to go ahead 2-0. The Warriors went to work on the comeback trail in their half of the fifth and took a 3-2 lead on a bases loaded, three-run double by
Jacob Thelen with two outs.
Sophomore
Tony Smith was stellar in relief after he came in to pitch for starter
Matt Costa with one out in the fifth. Smith retired the first seven batters he faced and 15 of 17, as he struck out six, walked none and surrendered just two hits in five innings of scoreless ball for his first win of the season. Costa struck out seven and walked two while giving up two runs on seven hits in four innings for the no decision.
In game two, the Warriors fell behind early when the Hustlin' Owls scored a run in the top of the first inning. They would get it back in the bottom half of the inning with an unearned run. More Oregon Tech errors in the bottom of the fourth allowed the Warriors to extend the inning and pick up two runs on three hits to take a 3-1 lead.
Warriors starter
Andrew Troncale, making his first start of the season, pitched well by striking out three in 4 2/3 innings of work, but he could not hold on to the 3-1 lead and was replaced by
Derek Eaton in the fifth. Eaton got out of a bases loaded jam to end the top of the fifth, and the Warriors' offense would reward him in the bottom half by getting a single run to take a 4-3 lead. Thelen led off the inning with a triple to right-center field and came in to score on a wild pitch.
Eric Cendejas came in to relieve Eaton in the top of the sixth with the tying run on second and one out. The junior got out of the jam with a groundout and a strikeout, and pitched a clean seventh inning, giving up just an infield single, to close out the game for his fifth save of the year.
The Warriors had 12 hits in game two and 11 in game one for 23 total in the doubleheader. Thelen extended his hitting streak to eight games with a 3-for-8 day at the plate. Catcher
Seth Hudson pushed his hit streak to five games.
The Warriors will now prepare for perhaps the biggest series of the season next weekend. The Warriors will head north to Chico State for a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series. The Warriors trail fourth place Cal State Dominguez Hills in the CCAA, the final spot for the CCAA Championship Tournament, by 1 1/2 games. The Wildcats are behind by two games. Chico State began this week ranked No. 4 in the NCAA West Region rankings. The top four teams in the region at season's end will go to the NCAA West Region Tournament.
