TURLOCK — It came down to the last shot against 14th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona. Cal State Stanislaus used excellent defense down the stretch for an opportunity to win with its final possession, but
Chad Johnson's shot rims off the basket as the visiting Broncos escaped Warrior Arena with a 51-50 win.
Johnson's shot against a triple-team was just a bit too long as time expired, giving the defending NCAA West Region champion Cal Poly Pomona, the one-point victory Saturday afternoon at Warrior Arena.
Johnson led the Warriors with 16 points,
Prince Abidoye added 12 and
Frank Monge scored eight and pulled a game-high nine rebounds.
Pomona, which played in last season's national championship game, led by six with 4:36 left to play, but the Warriors used a 6-0 run, capped by a Monge layup with two minutes to go, to even the score at 47-47.
The run was sparked by a great defensive stand coming out of a media timeout that gave the Warriors momentum. After Johnson converted on two free throws after the 4:12 media break, Stanislaus forced a shot-clock violation on the CPP offense. The Warriors then made two steals in two consecutive Broncos possessions, each time scoring two points to tie the game with Monge's layup.
Pomona, though, took a three-point lead on an Austin Swift three-pointer but
Julian Williams would tie the score with his own triple with 50 seconds left.
Cal Poly Pomona's Dahir Nasser converted on one of his two free throws with 20 ticks remaining to give Stanislaus a chance.
With no timeouts remaining, the Warriors ran the court before picking up a foul as Pomona had fouls to give. With two seconds left, Johnson received the inbounds pass and took a chance just inside the three-point arch in traffic, missing the shot as the buzzer sounded.
Swift finished with 19 points, including five three-pointers, and eight rebounds to lead Pomona (5-1, 3-0 CCAA). He scored 14 of his points in the second half. Nasser finished with 11 and Donnelle Brooker had 10.
Jordan Stokes and
Tyler Smith contributed on the glass, pulling eight and six rebounds respectively for CSUS.
The Warriors opened the contest going 0-for-10 from the floor before finishing the first half 8-for-28 for 28.6 percent. CSUS managed to lead 20-19 at the break.
Cal State Stanislaus, now 4-4 overall and 0-3 in CCAA play, will take on defending conference champion Cal State San Bernardino, Sunday at 2:30 p.m. CSUSB beat Chico State 85-74 on Saturday.
