TURLOCK —
Dwight Jones scored a career high 19 points to spark the team as Cal State Stanislaus got its offense back to beat San Francisco State, 63-59, Friday night.
Jordan Stokes had 12 points and eight rebounds while
Frank Monge led all players with 10 rebounds to go with his eight points as the Warriors snapped a two-game skid to improve to 9-8 overall and 5-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
San Francisco State, dropped to 13-7 and 6-6 in the CCAA, was led by Phoenix O'Rourke with 14 points.
Jones went 5-for-9 from the floor and nailed 8 of 11 free throws for his career night. He also had three assists and pulled four rebounds. He scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half after playing in just seven minutes as a starter in opening period.
Unlike last weekend, the Warriors came out hot and had a lead as large as 10 points just before the end of the first half. After trailing by one, 18-17, at 6:03, the Warriors used an 11-0 run, capped by a
Marcus Lever three-pointer, for a 10-point, 28-18 advantage with 1:48 to go.
Stanislaus would take a 28-21 lead into intermission when O'Rourke responded to Lever's triple with one of his own long-range shot.
The Warriors would lead by 10 again early in the second half, but San Francisco State did not go away quietly in front of a energetic announced crowd of more than 400. The Gators cut the Stanislaus lead to one-point six times but never took over.
Back-to-back baskets by Stokes during a 28 second stretch inside the two-minute mark gave the Warriors a 58-53 lead with 1:20 to go.
The Warriors then went 5-for-6 from the free throw line to seal the deal. Lever's final free throw with 3.9 seconds left gave Stanislaus a 63-56 lead before a Nefi Perdomo long three-pointer at the buzzer created the final score.
Saturday, the Warriors will wrap up their five-game homestand with a game against Cal State Monterey Bay (6-11, 4-8 CCAA). The Otters beat Chico State 61-58 Friday night in Chico.
