TURLOCK — In a reversal of fortune, the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team turned away the defending conference champion Cal State San Bernardino, 70-68, Sunday afternoon at Warrior Arena.

After missing their final shot Saturday against Cal Poly Pomona, the Warriors held on to beat the visiting Coyotes on Sunday, as the red-hot CSUSB offense missed all three of its field goal attempts with time running out.

Four Warriors scored in double digits as Jordan Stokes and Prince Abidoye each with 15 to lead Stanislaus to its first conference win of the season. Cal State Stanislaus improved to 5-4 overall and 1-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The win also snapped a four-game skid.

San Bernardino (5-3 overall and 3-1 in the CCAA) was led by Corey Caston with 16 points and Lawrence Tyson had 15 points.

CSUSB won the conference tournament last season and has won at least a share of the CCAA title eight times during the last decade. Cal State Stanislaus head coach Larry Reynolds was the coach of the Coyotes during three of those championship runs from 1999-2002.

Abidoye gave the Warriors a 60-53 lead at 6:07 to play with a three-pointer, but the experienced Coyotes would not go away and staged a comeback. Tyson made one of his five three-pointers and Caston made a layup inside the two-minute mark to even the score at 67-67.

After Abidoye missed a three-pointer, Stokes battled for an offensive rebound only to have his shot blocked out of bounds. A Warrior timeout later, Stokes hit a layup to give the home team a 69-67 lead with 39 seconds remaining.

On the ensuing possession, CSUSB's Aaron Hill drew a foul, but missed his first free throw attempt before making the second for an one-point game.  Warrior senior Chad Johnson then converted on one of his two free throws with 16 ticks left for the final margin.

In the final seconds, the Coyotes missed a layup and then a jumper before a deadball rebound with 3.1 seconds left. A timeout later, Tyson missed a short baseline jumper as the time expired.

CSUSB shot 48.4 percent from the floor in the second half, including seven three-pointers. The Coyotes finished with 11 three-pointers.

Johnson finished with 11 points and seven rebounds and Frank Monge had 13 points to pace Stanislaus. Tyler Smith also pulled seven rebounds.

Saturday afternoon, the Warriors had a last-second shot that rimmed out before losing 14th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona, 51-50.
