Warriors lose in five to Gators

TURLOCK- The Cal State Stanislaus volleyball team lost a tough battle of five sets (19-25, 25-21, 25-19, 19-25, 16-18) Saturday night against San Francisco State.

Before Saturday's match these two teams had evenly matched records overall and in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.  The Warriors are now 9-7, 6-5 in the CCAA.

The Warriors had a slow start against San Francisco State, never gaining the lead throughout the entire first set.  Set two was a close game with the score coming to a tie nine times, but the Warriors squeaked out the win.  The Warriors momentum did not slow after set two.  In set three Cal State Stanislaus took a 10-5 lead over the Gators and never allowed less than a four point cushion.  Set four looked much like set two, only the score was tied 13 times.  The Gators pulled away with a 7-1 run to win  and to push a fifth set.  

The final game was in the Warriors grasp many times.  Cal State Stanislaus had the lead until they reached point 11.  Then the battle between these two teams escalated.  Set point was reached by the Warriors three times, but they were unable to finish.  The Gators reached set point by a Warrior error, which then allowed them the upper hand, which they finished on the next ball.

Lianne Vicchio was the Warriors leader with 17 kills.  Melissa Bishop recorded a season high of 14 kills and Kaycee Gow tied her career high of 10 kills.  

Nicki Brown had 34 assists on the night, only playing three complete sets.  

The Warriors, once again, dominated in blocking compared to their opponent, recording 7 team blocks to the Gators 3 team blocks.  Setter Nicki Brown led the Warrior team with 4 block assists.  Three other Warriors -Bishop, Gow, Andrea Fett - made strong contributions on the net with 3 blocks a piece.  

Fett also recorded 4 service aces, for the second night in a row. Megan Britton also had a strong night offensively with her serving and defensively, she led her team with 27 digs.

San Francisco's Lauren Walsh led the Gators with 20 kills.  Setter Iris Tolenada recorded a high of 61 assists.

The Gators now improve to 10-6, 7-4 in conference play.

The Warriors next match will be at 7 p.m.Wednesday when they host Chico State.
