What's on Tap
There are no more non-conference games as the CCAA season heats up with the Warriors traveling to take on #15 Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. this week.
Last Week
Last week, the Warriors and the rest of Division II, took the week off for the NCAA Division II Life in Balance mandated dead period. No games and practices were allowed between Dec. 20-26. The Warriors resumed practice on Monday, Dec. 27.
Last Game
Evan Scott and
Dan Daviess each took a half of the game to show their scoring abilities as they led the Warriors to a 65-56 victory over Cal Baptist at home in the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. Scott scored 19 points and pulled 10 boards while Daviess netted a career-best 18 points.
Hot Start for Evan Scott
Evan Scott was the man in the first half of the game against Cal Baptist as he was 7-for-10 with four three-pointers for 18 points in just 14 minutes of play. He accounted for 18 of the team's 31 first half points for a 31-24 Stanislaus lead at the break. Scott finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds for his first (also the team's first this season) double-double.
Second Half Belonged to Daviess
Like
Evan Scott, who took charge in the first half,
Dan Daviess was the go-to man in the second half as the sharp-shooter scored 15 of his 18 points after the break. Daviess did it mostly at the free throw line, hitting all eight of his attempts. He also made three field goals including a three-pointer to help the Warriors rally late to hold off the Lancers.
Stifling Defense
The Warriors have held their opponents under 42 percent shooting in seven games this season and in six of the eight contests limited opposition to 64 points or less (under 70 in all games against non-Division I opponents). Stanislaus held Humboldt State, the top scoring team in the CCAA (88.0 points per game average prior to game), to just 58 points and a low of 35.8 percent shooting … Opponents are now averaging just 65.5 per game, including 89 by Pacific, with a 42.2 field goal percentage from the field.
Dan the Three-Point Man
Dan Daviess continues to be the team's top long-range shooter as he made two more three-pointers on Dec. 18 against Cal Baptist. He has now made two three-pointer in five of the last six games and leads the team with 14 three-pointers, shooting at a team-best 42.4 percent average (14 for 33).
Low Scoring Games
One could expect a low scoring game when the Warriors are involved as Cal State Stanislaus is currently seventh in the conference in scoring defense, allowing just 65.5 points per game (0.1 points behind SF State's 65.4). The Warriors, however, are also last in the CCAA in scoring at 60.0.
Earning the Free Points
Cal State Stanislaus is third in the CCAA shooting from the free throw line with a .746 average (132 for 177). After shooting 30.8 percent from the free throw line in game one of the season, the Warriors have made 77.4 percent of their foul shots. Twice they have made more than 85 percent of their free throws in a game (17 for 19 at Chico State on Dec. 8 and 25 for 29 vs. Cal Baptist on Dec. 18).
Among the CCAA Stats Leaders
When counting all games,
Reggie Jones is now 8th in scoring (14.3 ppg), but leads the league in scoring during CCAA games only (20.5 ppg). He is also 9th in field goal percentage (.547), seventh free throw percentage (.818) …
Dan Daviess is 6th in three-point field goal percentage (.424) and 10th in three-pointers made (14).
Head Coach Larry Reynolds
Larry Reynolds is in his second season as the Warriors' head coach. In his first season, the Warriors went 10-17, the first-10-win season since a 13-16 mark in 2006-07. Reynolds came to Cal State Stanislaus after leading Long Beach State to a NCAA tournament appearance in 2006-07 when the 49ers went 24-8. As a Division II coach at Cal State San Bernardino from 1997 to 2002, Reynolds posted a 110-35 overall record. Under Reynolds, CSUSB won three CCAA titles, two regional championships and made four NCAA tournament appearances. Reynolds was named CCAA coach of the year four times and was the west region coach of the year in 1998-99 following the Coyotes' West Region championship.
CCAA Basketball Championships
The 2011 CCAA Men's & Women's Basketball Championship tournament will be held at the beginning of March. Eight teams qualify for the tournament with first round games on campus site March 1. The four winners will advance to the semifinals and finals in Hayward on the campus of Cal State East Bay. The winner of the tournament would receive the automatic bid for the NCAA tournament.
Warriors picked 7th in CCAA
In a vote of the conference coaches, the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball were predicted to be a conference tournament team by the end of the 2010-11 season. The Warriors were picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll. The Warriors are coming off a 6-16 CCAA season as they finished 10th. Defending national champion Cal Poly Pomona received 10 of 12 first place votes and is the favor to win the title in 2010-11.
