Warriors end tournament run with loss to Saint Martin's

TURLOCK — Cal State Stanislaus's run at the Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno ended on Sunday as they dropped to Saint Martin's 3-2 in a silver bracket game.

The Warriors ended the weekend 2-4 and falls to 8-25-1 overall. Stanislaus was 5-7 in its last 12 games dating back to last weekend's conference series split with Cal State San Bernardino.

The Saints got one the board first in the first inning and the Warriors answered right back in the second. Brittany Balanesi walked, next Kiley Mendez hit a hard shot into left field for a single and advanced to second on an error. The error allowed Balanesi to score.

The Warriors pulled ahead in the second when Erica McIntyre doubled to center field. McIntyre stole third and scored on a ground out to third by Missy Corral for a 2-1 lead. Corral and Mendez were responsible for the RBIs of the game.

Saint Martins answered right back and scored another run at the bottom of the third to tie the game at 2-2. Both teams battled until the sixth inning when the Warriors could not hold on any longer when Brittani Weatherford gave up a homerun to Emily Squiers, which turned out to be the game-winner. Weatherford only gave up six hits but falls to 4-16 on the season.

Warriors Nicole Jenkins and Sarah Locarnini also had hits against the Saints today both going 1-for-2.

Saints starter, Joslyn Eugenio recorded seven strikeouts and allowed five hits in the win. She also went 3-for-3 at the plate.

The Warriors resume conference play next weekend when they travel to Sonoma State for a four-game set in Rohnert Park.
