TURLOCK -- The Warriors kept knocking on the door for a score and finally got some help from Sonoma State as Cal State Stanislaus captured a 1-0 win Friday evening at Warrior Stadium.
Cal State Stanislaus, now 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the CCAA, equaled the program's best start. The 2004 team also started 6-1. Sonoma State falls to 1-3-2 and 0-3-2 in in conference play.
The win over Sonoma State snapped an eight-match winless streak against the Seawolves dating back to 2005 when the Warriors beat SSU twice.
With 7:21 left to play, a Seawolf defender tried to intercept a
Marissa Dunaway pass, but instead deflected into the net for a Stanislaus score. Dunaway, who had received the ball from
Alexia Poon, was trying to set up
Karenee Demery for another one of many Stanislaus offensive runs.
"We played fantastic tonight! Our possession was awesome and we created some great chances," CSUS head coach Gabriel Bolton said.
The Warriors were on the attack for most of the game, coming up with numerous scoring chances only to come up just short of the goal line. In the end, Stanislaus out-shot Sonoma State 20-5 with a 7-1 advantage in the first half.
The loss is Sonoma State's fifth consecutive winless match and the Seawolves have been shutout in each contest.
"Defensively we were very organized. Our back line did a great job of handling their speedy forwards," Bolton added.
Sonoma State goalkeeper Courtney Grixti recorded 10 saves to keep SSU in the game.
Cal State Stanislaus hosts Humboldt State (1-6, 1-4 CCAA) on Sunday. The HSU Lumberjacks lost 1-0 at Chico State on Friday.
