TURLOCK — It wasn't pretty, but it's a win as the Warriors ended the weekend with two victories after edging UC San Diego, 57-55, Saturday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.
Evan Scott scored 13 and
Reggie Jones chipped in 10 and that was enough for the victory as Cal State Stanislaus improved to 5-7 overall and 3-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Scott also had eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
The Warriors ended the Tritons' nine-game winning streak over them, beating UCSD for the first time since Jan. 6, 2006.
Christian Hatch led all players with 17 points -- 11 from the free throw line -- and 12 rebounds for UC San Diego as the Tritons fall to 8-6 overall and 3-5 in the CCAA. Tyler McGrath added 13 and Justin Brue had 11 points.
"We wanted to win two this weekend and we did that, so in that respect it feels great," Stanislaus head coach
Larry Reynolds said.
Neither team shot particularly well Saturday night. The Warriors were 19 for 49 from the floor and connected on just three of 16 three-pointers. UC San Diego made just 14 shots all nights on 43 tries (32.6 percent). The Tritons made a living on the line, hitting 24 of 29.
"Our shooting was off tonight, but our defense got us over the hump," said Reynolds.
UC San Diego also out-rebounded the Warriors, 36-26.
The game hovered around a 3-to-5-point margin for the most part. UC San Diego scored the game's first seven points, but the Warriors went on a 10-2 run for an one-point lead. The Warriors also had a brief seven-point lead after a Jones jumper at 13:06 in the second half.
The Warriors also had chances to put the game away on the free throw line but missed enough to allow the Tritons to stay close. UCSD actually had a chance to tie the game with a three-pointer with four seconds left, but Scott smartly fouled Casey Ryan at mid-court to only give the Tritons two points.
In the end, the Warriors were 16 of 23 from the free throw line.
Brett Sayad also contributed seven points, all of them in the first half, for the Warriors.
Dwight Jones and
Sam Marcus each had six points.
