TURLOCK — Playing with an extra day of rest, the Sonoma State women's soccer team used it to its advantage by scoring three unanswered goals for a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday at Warrior Stadium.

Cal State Stanislaus scored two early goals in the first 20 minutes of play, but the Seawolves managed to rally for the win. With the loss, the Warriors fall out of first place in the CCAA North for the first time this season.

The 21st ranked Warriors are now 5-2-3 overall and 4-2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Sonoma State, one of the hottest teams in the conference right now, moved up to a share of first place by improving to 5-3-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the CCAA. The Seawolves have gone 5-1-1 in their last seven contests.

Chico State, which beat Humboldt State, 1-0, on Sunday and Sonoma State each have 16 points. Cal State Stanislaus has 14 points in the standings.

Sonoma State got two days off in between matches as the Seawolves played at Humboldt State on Thursday. Cal State Stanislaus played 110 minutes of physical match at Chico State on Friday.

On Sunday, the shorter recovery period didn't seemed to matter early for the Warriors as they struck for two early scores.

In the 16th minute, Bernie Bettencourt sent a long pass from just inside of the midline to Karenee Demery, who ran past two defenders, collected the ball and scored to the right post under a diving SSU goalkeeper. It was Demery's fifth goal of the season and 24th of her career.

Less than four minutes later, at 19:09, Alexia Poon gave Stanislaus a 2-0 lead with a no-look flick with the back of her foot just in front of the left post. Demery tapped a Marissa Dunaway corner kick around a defender to find Poon in a sea of players to set up the goal.

But, Sonoma State quickly answered with a score in the 25th minute when an Elena Catania pass across the box sails by two Warrior defenders to find an open Taylor Edmonds for the goal.

In the second half, Sonoma State was more efficient with its shot selection. The Seawolves netted two goals on just five shots with Sara Studer and Megan Cunningham scoring.

The game-winner by Cunningham came in the 60th minute on a nice shot to the far post from the middle after she received a pass from Kate McFarland from the far side.

In the end, Cal State Stanislaus out-shot Sonoma State, 13-11, but came up just short to drop its first home match of the season.

Goalkeeper Millie Brown picked up four saves for the Warriors.
