TURLOCK — Sophomore All-American
Karenee Demery made sure the seniors go out with a win as she led Cal State Stanislaus to a 4-0 win over Cal State East Bay Sunday at Warrior Stadium.
Demery scored twice and assisted on another as the Warriors beat down the Pioneers to improve to 8-4-4, 7-4-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Demery is now tied atop of the CSUS record books with 28 career goals.
Freshman
Tina Benson also scored her first collegiate goal and
Alexia Poon added another score in the final minute of the match for the final count.
"I'm very proud of the way we bounced back today," CSUS head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. "Even though they were disappointed with Friday night they had a really positive attitude on Saturday so I was confident they would play well."
The Warriors stay in the hunt for a CCAA Tournament berth as Sonoma State lost at UC San Diego and Chico State beat Cal State Monterey Bay at home on Sunday. Cal State Stanislaus is now two points behind both Chico State and Sonoma State with two matches remaining.
The best-case senario for Cal State Stanislaus to win the CCAA North would be by winning both matches next weekend and for Sonoma State to beat Chico State next Sunday. The Warriors can still qualify for the CCAA Tournament with an at-large berth by simply winning both matches.
On Senior Day it was senior
Liz Scherrer connecting with Demery for the team's first score. It came at 11:19 when Scherrer found Demery streaking up the middle splitting defenders. With East Bay goalkeeper Nina Cefalo coming out to met her, Demery made a move to evade the goalie for an easy tap-in score.
The Warriors' second goal on the day came from Benson in the 35th minute. With
Allie Dugan passing to Demery on the far side, Demery sent a pass through defenders as she was getting triple-teammed to find Benson waiting unmarked on the left post for the goal. Benson, who had played just 36 minutes prior to today's match, entered the match just 39 seconds prior to the score.
"Tina has been training really hard and deserved an opportunity to play today. She finished a nice goal," Bolton said.
Cal State East Bay had some decent scoring chances in the first half and out-shot CSUS, 10-6. The Pioneers had two shots hit the post and two close range attempts blocked by Warrior defenders. In the end, East Bay had a slight 17-16 shot advantage but with only three on goal. The Warriors had 11 shots on goal.
"We played well defensively and shut out a solid team. Our team is really playing with a total commitment to defending," added Bolton.
Up 2-0, the Warriors continued pressing in the second half. Demery knocked in another score, her ninth of the season, at 76:26. This time the assist came from
Karli Nestler who had intercepted a pass at midfield.
With just 34 second left to play,
Alexia Poon netted the final Warrior goal with
Allison Case and Dugan credited with assists.
Demery now has nine goals and nine assists with 27 points in 2011. She tied Marti Teunissen's career record with 28 scores and tied Cherie Early for second with 15 caerer assists. Demery is also just eight points from becoming the all-time leading points scorer.
Seniors Scherrer and
Marissa Dunaway were honored in a pregame ceremony as they played in their final regular season home matches.
"Marissa and Liz have been an important part of our program. We will miss them. They are everything you could want in a student-athlete," Bolton said.
