ROHNERT PARK — It comes down to two matches on Sunday, the final day of the regular season for the CCAA. The Warriors are now in a must-win situation when they travel to Humboldt State on Sunday.
The Warriors and Sonoma State battled to a 1-1 tie on Friday. Cal State Stanislaus is now 8-4-5 overall and 7-4-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. With Chico State beating Humboldt State, the Warriors are now four points behind the division leaders.
To qualify for the CCAA Championship tournament at Warrior Stadium, the Warriors now must win at Humboldt State and Sonoma State must lose to Chico State on Sunday.
"We gave a tremendous effort today against a terrific team. It was a great soccer game," CSUS head coach
Gabriel Bolton said.
Karenee Demery scored her 10th goal of the season to become CSU Stanislaus' all-time leading scorer in the 51st minute. Her goal was set up by
Marissa Dunaway on an entry pass that Demery deposited over Sonoma State goalkeeper Alexia Sciacqua. It was Dunaway's seventh assist this season which brings her career total to 20 as she sits at No. 2 in that all-time list. Demery now has 29 career goals in less than two seasons.
"Karenee scored a wonderful goal and we created a lot of great chances as a team today," Bolton added.
However, Sonoma State tied the match 10 minutes later, at 60:13, on a controversial score. Taylor Colacion scored off a touch by a Sara Studer on a free play after a questionable foul was called on the Warriors.
The Warriors out-shot Sonoma State 14-5 in regulation and went on to beat SSU 16-8 in that offensive category in the draw. Sciacqua picked up seven saves.
Demery could have given the Warriors a last second thriller win in the second overtime, but her shot hit the cross bar with three seconds left to play.
Stanislaus goalkeeper
Millie Brown was superb in the net for the Warriors. She was credited with three saves because Sonoma State only had four shots on goal. The junior goalie also saved a penalty kick attempt in the ninth minute on a try by SSU's Ashley Martin. She also had a save against a breakaway goal in the second half.
"Millie made a number of fantastic saves today! She had a dominating performance today in the goal," Said Bolton.
Sunday's kickoff at HSU's College Creek Field is at 11:30 a.m.
