TURLOCK — With a strong day on both sides of the ball, the Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team played the No. 2 ranked UC San Diego Tritons to a scoreless draw on Sunday at Warrior Stadium.

Knowing goals were going to be hard to come by against UC San Diego, the Warriors put forth a brilliant effort to earn a tie. Cal State Stanislaus is now 5-3-4 overall and 4-3-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Warriors remain in third place in the CCAA North, four points behind leader Sonoma State, which beat Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday.

UC San Diego entered the contest undefeated and had only allowed three goals all season after nine matches. The Tritons, ranked No. 2 in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, are now 8-0-4 overall and 7-0-3 in the CCAA.

The tie snapped the Warriors' five-match losing streak against UC San Diego. It is the first time in six seasons that the Tritons were shutout after outscoring Stanislaus, 17-0, during that streatch.

"I'm extremely proud of our effort and the quality of soccer we played today," CSUS head coach Gabriel Bolton said. "We made some adjustments and the team committed 100% to our game plan."

While none of the shots found the back of the net on Sunday, the Warriors had many great scoring chances. One of the best chances in the second half was by sophomore All-American Karenee Demery. Her shot got by a diving UCSD goalkeeper but hit the far post at 46:11.

The Warriors kept attacking in the second half, out-shooting UCSD, 10-5, in the period, but Triton keeper Kristin Armstrong and the Trition defense answered every challenge. Armostrong ended up with seven saves to earn her seventh shutout.

"We created a lot of chances and really went at UCSD with a lot of confidence. We were a bit unlucky not to score," Bolton said.

For Cal State Stanislaus, goalkeeper Millie Brown had one of her best matches this season. Brown picked up six saves, many of them were spectatular grabs.

Brown and the defense kept UC San Diego off the board in the first overtime despite five Triton shot attempts. In the second OT, Anne Wethe almost gave the visitors the win on a shot after a mad scramble in front of the net. Wethe's shot got through traffic to the near post while Brown was at the far post. However, Warrior junior Bernie Bettencourt was there for the team save.

"Our team defending was amazing. It was our best effort of the year by far," Bolton added.

In the end, Stanislaus edged UC San Diego, 17-15, on the shot count. UCSD took nine corner kicks to the Warriors two.

A lot of younger faces on the Stanislaus side saw some playing time on Sunday, including a start by freshman Madeline Easterbrook. At one point in the match, the Warriors had six freshmen on the field.

The Warriors will have to hit the road again next weekend when they travel to Cal Poly Pomona for a match on Friday before taking on San Francisco State on Sunday.
