@ #23 Cal Poly Pomona BRONCOS (4-0, 1-0 CCAA)
Series Notes: Cal Poly Pomona leads the series 21-6 with a six-game winning streak over the Warriors. The last time Stanislaus bet Pomona was on Feb. 15, 2008, a 64-62 Warrior win in Pomona.
The Last Time We Met... was on Feb. 19, 2011, in Turlock with Pomona holding off a CSUS second half comeback for a 60-58 decision.
Prince Abidoye had 11 points off the bench to lead Stanislaus while
Reggie Jones was held to six points.
About the Broncos: Cal Poly Pomona debuted at No. 23 in this week's NABC Top 25 … The Broncos are 2-0 thus far this season with wins against Notre Dame de Namur and San Francisco State … DeRonn Scott leads with 19 points per game (he's only played in one game) … Mitchell Anderson averages 12 points and six rebounds per contest.
Saturday, Dec. 3, 7:30 p.m.
@ San Francisco State GATORS (2-5, 0-1 CCAA)
Series Notes: The Gators lead this long rivalry, 45-35, but the teams split the series in each of the last three seasons. The Warriors are 14-12 against San Francisco State in CCAA play.
The Last Time We Met... was on Feb. 24, 2011, in San Francisco …
Reggie Jones had 17 points to lead the Warriors over the Gators, 68-57, to avenge an earlier loss at home to SF State (73-68, Jan. 22, 2011).
About the Gators San Francisco State has lost five straight after opening the year with a win over Academy of Art until Monday night when they beat Division I Jacksonville State, 71-68, at St. Mary's Shamrock Classic … All-CCAA player Nefi Perdomo had 24 points on Monday. He averages 13.6 points per game … James Albright averages 15.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
Getting the “Long” Trips Out of the Way
The Warriors will have had three road trips by the time Christmas rolls around, but at least they will get the two long ones out of the way. The CCAA schedule calls for Thursday road games with “tough” travel partner games (Cal Poly Pomona-San Francisco State and Sonoma State-Humboldt State). Stanislaus will have these trips two of the next three weekends.
Another 3-0 Start
Cal State Stanislaus has started 3-0 for the third time in the last four years. A win on Thursday would equal the best start during the CCAA era, when they did it during
Larry Reynolds' first year at CSUS in 2009-10. Stanislaus also started 4-0 in 2000-01.
Warriors enjoyed Thanksgiving Shootout
The tournament at Fresno Pacific was called the Thanksgiving Shootout and the Warriors shot well. In two games the Warriors shot 55 percent (55 for 100) with 17 three-pointers for two victories.
Scorching Second Halves
Last weekend, the Warriors were a combined 32-for-46 during the second half of games. In Friday's second half, they shot 66.7 percent and scored 52 points in the big win over Texas A&M International (a Division II team from the Heartland Conference). The Warriors then shot a blazing 72 percent in the second half against host Fresno Pacific.
All-CCAA Center Off to Good Start
Reggie Jones, a 2010-11 All-CCAA pick, is off to a good start after turning in a double-double to begin the year (24 points, 14 rebounds on Nov. 18). Jones averaged 14.5 points in two games at Fresno Pacific. He had 13 points in just 17 minutes of play (foul trouble) in Friday's contest versus Texas A&M International.
High Scoring Warriors
The Warriors are averaging nearly 81 points per game through three games and have scored 85 or more twice (they scored in the 80s just twice and just once over 85 in 2010-11). Stanislaus is third in the CCAA in scoring with a 80.7 averaging trailing Humboldt State (91.0) and Cal State L.A. (82.8).
Spreading the Wealth
Seven different Warriors have scored in double digits and aside from
Reggie Jones and
Brett Sayad, different Warriors have putting up solid totals each game.
Marcus Walters had 16 one game, Joseph Malone netted 17 in his debut and
Ronnie Sawyer scored 14 on Saturday.
Donald Gaines and Vincent Fuller have also shown scoring ability.
Passing the Rock
The Warriors are also passing the ball around finding the open man as they have turned in two 20-plus-assist games … Vincent Fuller had eight assists and
Ronnie Sawyer five on Saturday … On Nov. 18, three different players had four each … As a team, Stanislaus averages 18.3 assists per game.
Head Coach Larry Reynolds
Larry Reynolds is in his third season as the Warriors' head coach. In his first season, the Warriors went 10-17, the first-10-win season since a 13-16 mark in 2006-07. Reynolds came to Cal State Stanislaus after leading Long Beach State to a NCAA tournament appearance in 2006-07 when the 49ers went 24-8. As a Division II coach at Cal State San Bernardino from 1997 to 2002, Reynolds posted a 110-35 overall record. Under Reynolds, CSUSB won three CCAA titles, two regional championships and made four NCAA tournament appearances. Reynolds was named CCAA coach of the year four times and was the west region coach of the year in 1998-99 following the Coyotes' West Region championship.
Fitzpatrick Arena
Warrior Arena was renamed Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena at the start the 2010-11 season. The arena is named for Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick, owners of Valley Lexus/Valley BMW in Modesto and other car dealerships in the Bay Area. The Fitzpatricks have been long-time supporters of California State University Stanislaus. The gym has been named Warrior Arena since 1999, 21 years after it was built.
CCAA Basketball Championships
The 2012 CCAA Men's & Women's Basketball Championship tournament will be held at the beginning of March. Eight teams qualify for the event with first round games on campus site Feb. 28. The four winners will advance to the semifinals and finals, March 2-3, in La Jolla on the campus of UC San Diego. The winner of the tournament would receive the automatic bid for the NCAA tournament.
