TURLOCK —
Karenee Demery put on a show in the biggest game for the Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer program, so far, as the sophomore sensation lead the Warriors to a 4-0 win over Chico State for their first CCAA championship.
Demery scored three times and
Marissa Dunaway assisted on three scores to lead Cal State Stanislaus in front of nearly 1,500 fans at Warrior Stadium. The championship match was also televised in Northern California on the Comcast Hometown Network.
Cal State Stanislaus, now 11-4-5, will advance to the NCAA Tournament as the automatic qualifier from the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The seeding and regional tournament location will be announced by the NCAA on Monday.
Sunday's win gives Cal State Stanislaus its first women's soccer conference championship. It is the fifth CCAA title by a Warrior Athletics team since the program joined the CCAA.
"This is a special day for Cal State Stanislaus, our players, and all of our alumni," CSUS head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. "I told the team today before the game we were playing for everyone on our team and everyone that came before them. There is no doubt in my mind we made them proud today."
Chico State, 11-6-3 overall, will have to wait and see if they will get an at-large bid for the NCAA tournament. The Wildcats were ranked No. 7 in the region with the top six teams qualifying for the regional tournament.
The Warriors played heads up soccer, literally, on Sunday as the most prolific offense in the league showed off their scoring ability early and often. Three of the four Warriors goals scored were headers.
Demery got the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute after Dunaway's cross from the near side found Demery's head for the score.
Just six minutes later, the Warriors quickly go up 2-0 on a
Alisa Barlow header dead center in front of the goalkeeper from 8 yards out. Barlow's score was also assisted by Dunaway who collected a loose ball on the far side, dribbled around a Wildcat and sent in the perfectly placed ball.
The third Stanislaus score came in the 34th minute and the sequence of plays certainly will make the highlight reels. Barlow kept the ball in play from the end line with a backward-flick to
Katelyn Nebesnick, who headed the ball to Demery near the penalty kick spot. Demery, without looking, reverse kicked-in past Brianna Furner for the score.
Demery, the All-CCAA pick and the 2010 CCAA offensive and freshman of the year, scored her third goal for the hat trick at 65:46. This time, she out-jump her defender Molly Downtain, who is listed a 5-11 (Demery is 5-4), for a header goal. Dunaway was credited with her third assist on the day. Demery was awarded as the tournament's most valuable offensive player with four goals and an assist in two matches.
"It was all a team effort. I would give credit to the team for getting me the ball and I just did the easy thing," said Dunaway on her assists.
Demery, the school's all-time leading scorer, now has 15 goals and 11 assists this season. She now has 34 goals in two seasons.
Stanislaus goalkeeper
Millie Brown, who was named the tournament's most valuable defensive player, had three saves on Sunday with the shutout. She picked up four saves and held UC San Diego scoreless for 84 minutes on Friday.
The Warrior defense once again came up big and turned away the Wildcats as they held them to seven shots with just three shots on frame. The Warriors have allowed just two goals in the last five matches down the stretch. They are 4-0-1 in those five matches and scored 16 goals.
"A month ago we made a commitment as a team that we were going to be a great defensive team. To win today and win with a shutout was special," said Bolton.
"We had a lot of movement and a lot of energy today and when our defense plays as great as they did, they get (the forwards) the ball," Demery said.
Defensive midfielder Barlow and defenders
Vanessa Cervantes and
Emily Relles were recognized for their defensive play as they also made the All-Tournament team. Joining them and Demery are Dunaway and captain
Alexia Poon.
"It will be fun watching the NCAA selection show this year. We don't care who we play or where we go. We have been fantastic on the road this year. We have a lot of confidence going into the tournament which is nice," Bolton said.
