Thrilling Victory Over Chico State
It came down to the final seconds of overtime, but the Warriors prevailed in a thriller as they beat Chico State, 79-77.
Brett Sayad followed a
Vince Fuller missed shot with 2.2 seconds left to lift Cal State Stanislaus at Fitzpatrick Arena last Wednesday night.
Jones Player of the Week
Senior forward
Reggie Jones was named the Wilson/CCAA men's basketball player of the week for his performance last Wednesday against Chico State. Jones totaled 25 points, seven rebounds and three assists while helping the Warriors to a 79-77 overtime victory over CCAA rival Chico State. He connected on 54.5 percent (6-of-11) of his field goal attempts, and converted 12-of-14 free throw attempts.
Off to Best Start
The 5-1 start this season is the Warriors' best start during the CCAA era (when Cal State Stanislaus joined the CCAA in 1998). The Warriors started 4-1 twice before including 2009-10, head coach
Larry Reynolds' first season with Stanislaus. They were 5-2 to start the 2000-01 season.
Reggie at the Line
Reggie Jones is not just a scoring force in the paint, he can also hit the long jumpers. However, the big man is also a pretty good free throw shooter. For the season, Jones is 36 for 47 from the line (76.7 percent) and has already made 10 or more twice this season. He is 22 for his last 28 attempts in the last two games, including a 12-for-14 night last week against Chico State.
Out-Shooting Opponents
Cal State Stanislaus has out-shot its opponents in each of the first six games so far. Last week, the Warriors shot 43.6 percent versus Chico's 35.2 percent. The Warriors have shot 40 percent or better in all six games and are averaging 47.8 percent for the season, which is third best in the CCAA.
Prolific Offense
The Warriors are prolific offensively with the conference's third best scoring average. They are doing it both from the foul line and the three-point arch as they lead the CCAA in both categories. As a team the Warriors are 116 for 148 from the free throw line (78.4 percent). Led by
Reggie Jones' .667 (6-for-9) and
Dan Daviess' .571 (8-for-14), the Warriors are 42 for 102 from the 3-point arch for 41.2 percent.
The Return of Monge
Senior center
Frank Monge will be returning to the roster this Saturday when the Warriors travel to take on Sonoma State. Monge missed all of 2010-11 season due to a broken left foot and had to sit out this season until now (final semester of eligibility).
Rebounding Help
The “smaller” Warriors have been out-rebounded, especially offensively, in most games thus far. However help is coming with the return of Monge, who will provide a boost in height at 6-foot-11.
Head Coach Larry Reynolds
Larry Reynolds is in his third season as the Warriors' head coach. In his first season, the Warriors went 10-17, the first-10-win season since a 13-16 mark in 2006-07. Reynolds came to Cal State Stanislaus after leading Long Beach State to a NCAA tournament appearance in 2006-07 when the 49ers went 24-8. As a Division II coach at Cal State San Bernardino from 1997 to 2002, Reynolds posted a 110-35 overall record. Under Reynolds, CSUSB won three CCAA titles, two regional championships and made four NCAA tournament appearances. Reynolds was named CCAA coach of the year four times and was the west region coach of the year in 1998-99 following the Coyotes' West Region championship.
Fitzpatrick Arena
Warrior Arena was renamed Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena at the start the 2010-11 season. The arena is named for Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick, owners of Valley Lexus/Valley BMW in Modesto and other car dealerships in the Bay Area. The Fitzpatricks have been long-time supporters of California State University Stanislaus. The gym has been named Warrior Arena since 1999, 21 years after it was built.
CCAA Basketball Championships
The 2012 CCAA Men's & Women's Basketball Championship tournament will be held at the beginning of March. Eight teams qualify for the event with first round games on campus site Feb. 28. The four winners will advance to the semifinals and finals, March 2-3, in La Jolla on the campus of UC San Diego. The winner of the tournament would receive the automatic bid for the NCAA tournament.
