Carson, Calif. – The Cal State Stanislaus Warriors had a strong start in their first weekend of conference play as they took down Cal State Dominguez hills with identical scores of 3-1 in Friday's double-header.
The Warriors improve to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Dominguez Hills is now 4-2 overall and 0-2 in the CCAA.
Game 1
Warriors Ace
Brittani Weatherford (2-3) pitched her best game yet with five strikeouts in 9.1 innings. Weatherford only allowed two hits on the day, and no earned runs.
Game one was a pitchers battle with no score through seven complete innings. There were six Warriors left on base through the first seven innings, while the Toros left 10 stranded.
In the top of the eighth inning it seemed to be coming together for the Warriors after
Sarah Locarnini singled to the pitcher and advanced to scoring position after
Brieanna Stone advanced Locarnini on a groundout. With only one out,
Vanessa Del Toro layed down a sacrifice bunt which allowed Locarnini to take third. Warrior third baseman,
Jordan Flora came through in the clutch and drove Locarnini in with a shot to left field giving Stanislaus the first lead of the game.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth Cal State Dominguez Hills challenged the Cal State Stanislaus defense and forced three Warrior errors, which brought the score even once again.
As the pitching battle carried on the Warriors saw their opportunity to take the game once again in the top of the tenth. Stone started it off with a single to the left field. Del Toro then followed with a double down the left line, advancing Stone to third.
Missy Corral took first after being hit by a pitch, loading the bases with only one out. Up next, Flora reached on a fielders' choice. Toros pitcher Stephanie Jimenez, elected to get the force at home, maintaining the tie score. Pinch hitter
Lauren Nagle reached on a fielding error by Dominguez Hills' first baseman which scored Del Toro and gave the Warriors a one run lead. After Stanislaus' center fielder,
Brittany Balanesi was hit by a pitch the Warriors had a two run cushion taking them into the bottom of the tenth inning.
Cal State Stanislaus brought in their number two starting pitcher,
Kristan Burns with one out in the bottom of the tenth. Warrior defense held strong and was able to hold off a determined Toros offense.
Offensive leaders for the Warriors were
Missy Corral hitting 2-for-3 with a run and Locarnini batted 2-for-4 with a run. Flora and Balanesi each recorded RBI's for the Warriors.
Game 2
After wrapping up game one, Burns was also the starting pitcher for game number two. Burns pitched seven innings allowing only five hits and one earned run.
Cal State Dominguez Hills got off to a strong start in game two after a solid triple by Khryssi Steele and a single RBI by shortstop Emily McEwen which allowed Steele to score in the bottom of the first.
Jimenez shut down the Warriors and held the lead for five innings, but in the top of the sixth the Warriors bats started to come alive. Del Toro Started it off for the Warriors by hitting a single through the left side. Corral laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing Del Toro to scoring position.
Jordan Flora stepped up to the plate and homered to right field, giving Stanislaus the lead going into the final inning of play.
Burns then shut down the Toros with two 1-2-3 innings and improving her record to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA.
The Warriors wrap up the four game series against Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday, with an 11 a.m. start
