Carson, Calif. – The Cal State Stanislaus softball team was defeated in two short five-inning games of 8-0 by Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday, wrapping up the four game series.
After the split series the Warriors fall to 2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, 5-5 overall. The Toros also have a 2-2 record in the CCAA and are now 6-2 overall.
The Warriors came close to scoring in the third inning of game one after Laura Ginns doubled down the left field. Sarah Locarnini then bunted a single that advanced Ginns to third base with only one out. Locarnini then stole second, but the Toros pitching shut down the Warrior bats stranded both runners.
Locarnini, Ginns, Jordan Flora, and Nicole Jenkins were the only Warriors able to reach on hits.
Pitcher, Brittani Weatherford was unable to get past the Toros hitting, only pitching 1.2 innings before Kristen Burns came in for relief. Weatherford and Burns each gave up four earned runs in game one.
Game two looked a lot like game one, with the Warriors only collecting three hits. Burns was the starting pitcher for the Warriors. She gave up five hits and three earned runs in 2.2 innings pitched. Alyssa Coehlo attempted to shut down the Toros' hot bats, but was unable to keep them from winning by eight run rule.
Locarnini led Stanislaus 2-for-3, but was stranded on base twice. Kiley Mendez was the only other Warrior to get a hit in game two.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, Lauren Harper and Stephanie Jimenez worked strong on the mound, making it very difficult for the Warriors to make contact and eventually lead to two Toros wins.
The Warriors were unable to take their momentum of the bats and their strong pitching into the final two games of the series. Cal State Dominguez Hills limited Stanislaus to just four hits in game one.
The Warriors will extend their road trip to Humboldt State next for a four-game series. First double-header will take place on Friday afternoon.
