TURLOCK — The inability to defend around the perimeter hurt the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team again as Cal State San Bernardino defeated the Warriors, 69-56, during homecoming night at Fitzpatrick Arena.
The Coyotes hit 13 three-pointers — the most allowed by the Warriors this season — as Cal State San Bernardino improved to 13-9 overall and 11-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association after Friday night's win. Sidney Hall came off the bench for six of those treys to lead CSUSB with 19 points.
For the Warriors,
Reggie Jones had a career-best 29 points including a perfect 10-for-10 from the foul line, but a strong effort by Cal State Stanislaus fell short. CSUS snapped a two-game winning streak and is now 10-13 overall and 8-11 in league play.
With Chico State and Cal State L.A. both winning their home games, the Warriors are now standing solo in eighth place in the conference standings with three games to go. Cal State Monterey Bay and Sonoma State are just a game behind the Warriors at 7-12.
For the sixth time this season the Warriors allowed 10 or more three-pointers in a game and all of them resulted in defeats. Friday night, San Bernardino shot 46.4 percent from long range and nailed a three-pointer just about every time the Warriors begin to make a run.
Trailed by eight points in the first half, Stanislaus cut it to three with some free throws and a Jones layup. However back-to-back Robbie Robinson triples later, CSUSB pushed ahead by nine en route to a 32-22 score at the break.
In the second half Cal State Stanislaus trailed by as many as 17 points, 60-43, with 6:48 to play. Warrior junior
Brett Sayad jump-started a rally with a three-pointer, followed by a Jones jumper. Then a Sayad steal which led to a layup by
Dwight Jones made it a 10-point game.
However, Aaron Hill made a three-pointer to end that Warrior charge. A couple of
Reggie Jones free throws later, Sidney Hall's triple at 4:11 gave CSUSB a 14-point lead it would not surrender.
The Warriors had entered the weekend tied for last in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage defensively. Opponents had made 36.4 percent and 127 three-pointers against them.
As for
Reggie Jones, he once again show why he is among the best in the CCAA. He hit 9 of 15 shots inside, often heavily challenged. He also hit a few pull-up jumpers to finish with his career-best points total. He added three blocked shots and pulled a game-high six rebounds.
Reggie Jones, now with 326 points, is the first Warrior to score 300 or more points in a season since Michael Dyson tallied 314 in 2008-09.
Evan Scott finished with 10 points and four rebounds while
Dwight Jones chipped in seven points and four rebounds.
Theron Laundermill chipped in 13 points with four blocked shots while Nate Rote added 11 points to pace the Coyotes.
The Warriors will host defending national champion Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night for their home finale. Cal Poly Pomona lost at Chico State, 62-58, Friday.
