TURLOCK — Against the second best defense in the conference, Cal State Stanislaus was able to hang with the defending national champs before dropping a 60-58 decision in the home finale Saturday night.

Prince Abidoye came off the bench for 11 points to lead the Warrior men but Reggie Jones was held to just six points as Cal State Stanislaus. The Warriors stay in eighth place in the standings and are now 10-14 overall and 8-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Converting on their free throws down the stretch, the Broncos escaped with the win and improved to 14-9 overall and 11-8 in league play. Tobias Jahn and Donnelle Booker each scored 16 to lead Cal Poly Pomona.

Cal State Stanislaus will now have to wrap-up the regular season on the road with games at Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State Thursday and Friday, respectively. The Warriors' postseason hopes hang in the balance pending results all around the CCAA next week.

Saturday night, after senior night festivities honoring five Warriors playing in their final home game, the low-scoring affair that CSUS liked as part of its game plan was in effect. Both teams shot 35 percent or lower in the opening half en route to a slight 23-20 halftime lead for the Warriors.

The game plan for the second best defensive team Cal Poly Pomona was obvious: deny entry passes and  limite touches for Jones. Pomona had entered the weekend allowing just 59.4 points per game in 21 pervious games.

Jones, who averaged nearly 16 points per game and was coming off a 29-point performance Friday, was held to just two shots and made one of two free throws for one single point in the first half.

Fortunately, the Warriors got scoring from Brett Sayad and Evan Scott, each with five points in the first half while they held the Broncos to just 7 of 20 shooting.

The second half was more of less the same with either team pulling ahead much. Despite the Warriors gooing more than seven minutes without a field goal, the game was still a 45-43 Pomona lead with 3:06 to go.

Pomona's Matt Rosser, though, hit a three at 2:31 to make it a five-point lead — Pomona's largest up until that point. After Warrior junior guard Dan Daviess answered back with his own three-pointer, the Broncos pull ahead with four free throws by Kevin Menner.

Daviess would hit another triple and an Abidoye three-pointer with 29 ticks left gave the Warriors a little bit of life.  However, Fell and Jahn hit a few free throws in the final seconds to help CPP squeak out the win.

Jones finished the night 2-for-7 and only made it to the foul line twice and was 2-for-4. He pulled four rebounds, had two assists,  two steals and blocked a shot.

Scott ended up with nine points and three Warriors — Daviess, Jones and Marcus Lever — each chipped in six.
