McKINLEYVILLE — The Cal State Stanislaus softball team scored 24 runs in two games en ruote to a doubleheader sweep over Humboldt State Saturday afternoon at McKinleyville High School.
In game one,
Brittani Weatherford made just one mistake and the Warrior bats were alive as Cal State Stanislaus won the series opener, 8-3. A total of 30 runs were scored in game two with the Warriors victorious 16-14.
The Warriors are now 7-5 overall and 4-2 in CCAA play after the twinbill sweep.
Brittany Balanesi,
Lauren Nagle and
Jordan Flora each went 2-for-4 and
Kiley Mendez drove in two runs in leading the Warriors in the first game.
Weatherford tossed a complete game three-hitter and struck out five. She allowed a Lumberjack three-run homerun in the first inning but cruised the rest of the way to improved to 3-4 on the season.
The win snapped a four-game skid to the Jacks and it was also the Warriors' first win at Humboldt since ending HSU's season in 2009 during the NCAA West Regional tournament.
The Warriors jumped out on top early in the nightcap with six runs in the top of the first. Flora belted an one-out grand slam with three Warriors walking in front of her.
Flora ended the game 3-for-5 with two doubles and six runs batted in to lead the team offensively. Flora also made the difference in the Warriors' six-run sixth inning with a two-run double that put her team back on top after the Jacks had rallied for an 11-10 lead.
Vanessa Del Toros went 3-for-5 with a double and batted in three scores. Mendez also went 4-for-5 and
Laura Ginns had two hits as part of the Warriors' 17-hit attack.
Freshman pitcher Alyssa Coehlo got the win in relief of starter
Kristan Burns in the nightcap. Coehlo pitched the final four innings and gave up four runs on five hits.
The Lumberjacks hit four home runs in the second game.
The same two teams will play two more on Sunday to wrap-up the four-game set.
