McKINLEYVILLE — Twice on Sunday the Warriors forced Humboldt State to play come-front behind, but the Lumberjacks managed to take two one-run games from Cal State Stanislaus to split the series.

Humboldt State (7-4, 2-2 CCAA) won both games of the doubleheader, 4-3, as the teams split the four-game set. Cal State Stanislaus won twice on Saturday by scoring 24 runs in two games.

The Warriors, now with two splits on the road, are now 7-7 overall and 4-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. They are scheduled to play two against Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday in Turlock before hosting Chico State Friday and Saturday.

"We just didn't come up with the key hits when we needed it today," head coach Jan Schefkowitz said.

Cal State Stanislaus rallied for three runs in game one's second inning for a 3-2 lead, but managed just two hits in the game spoiling a solid pitching performance by sophomore ace Brittani Weatherford.

Weatherford allowed four runs on six hits and struck out nine batters. However a first inning two-run homerun to Kirsten Nouzovski gave HSU the early lead.

The Lumberjacks tied the game in the third on a RBI double by Nouzovski, then she drove in the game-winner in the fifth with a single to run that scored Chrissy Stalf, who had hit a two-out double. Nouzovski ended up 3-for-3 and drove in all four runs.

In the nightcap, Missy Corral gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead in the first, scoring Laura Ginns and Vanessa Del Toro. HSU tied the score in the home half of the first and went ahead 3-2 in the third on a Nikki Ketteringham double off starter Weatherford.

However, the Warriors answered back the next inning. Brittany Balanesi led off with a single for one of her three hits and was moved over on a bunt. Nicole Jenkins then drove in Balanesi with a single to center to even the score.

Warrior freshman Kristan Burns took the circle in the fourth and gave up a leadoff homer to Lindsay Warren that broke-up the tie for the final count. Even though Burns only allowed that lone run on two hits in the final three innings, she was charged with the loss.

Other than Balanesi going 3-for-3 in the night cap, Del Toro had two hits including a double and Corral drove in two scores.

Five of the Cal State Stanislaus seven losses this season have been one-run games.
