TURLOCK – The Cal State Stanislaus softball team dropped two games, 9-4 and 6-5, to the Notre Dame de Namur Argonauts Wednesday afternoon.
The Warriors are now 7-9 overall and remain 4-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Stanislaus started off strong in the bottom of the first after
Sarah Locarnini reached first on a bunt single.
Missy Corral moved Locarnini to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Vanessa Del Toro then took advantage of off-pitching and took first base on a walk.
Jordan Flora then took a ball over the right field fence for a three-run homerun.
Brittani Weatherford was the starter for the Warriors in game one and threw a perfect game through four innings. The Argonauts began to connect to Stanislaus pitching after Weatherford walked her first batter, Robin Araujo in the top of the fifth. The designated player, Jessie Frediani, came up with just one out an singled to the right field advancing Araujo to second. With a runner in scoring position for the first time and two outs on the board, Hillary Ruddick, drove in both runs with a double. Following was catcher Kayla Anderson who tied the game up with a double to left field.
The Argonauts began to connect more the next inning and forced the Warriors to make a pitching change after giving up three singles and a two run homerun to Notre Dame de Namur. With the three run lead the Warriors could not seem to connect with the ball and were unable to catch up to the Argonauts.
The Warriors brought in Alyssa Coehlo to pitch in relief after Weatherford's six earned runs in 5.2 innings. Coehlo could not hold off the Argonauts hot batting. Robin Araujo hit her second two-run homerun of the day in the top of the seventh which secured a big enough lead to beat the Warriors 9-4 in game one.
Contributing to the Warrior offense was Locarnini, who was 2-for-4 with a run.
Kristan Burns started game two for the Warriors, struggling through five innings with a total of five earned runs on six hits and she walked six batters.
Burns gave up three runs in the first inning to give the Argonauts some cushion in game two. The Warriors came close to scoring in the bottom of the first after
Brieanna Stone reached on an throwing error by the Argonauts second baseman. Del Toro walked once again to advance Stone to second and put a runner in scoring position. Flora, with a big at bat hit a single up the middle which advanced all of the runners, but Stone attempting to score was thrown out from center field preventing the Warriors from getting a run on the board in the first.
Although the Warriors were scoreless for three innings, they fought back and came within three runs after a solo homerun by
Kiley Mendez shifted the momentum the Warriors' way. Pitcher, Burns, singled to right field, followed by two consecutive walks by the Argonaut pitching, loading the bases. A single by Corral and an error by the left fielder on the same play allowed two more Stanislaus runs to score and brought the score to 6-3.
Burns and Weatherford in relief held Notre Dame de Namur for the final two innings of play, while the Warriors continued to connect with their bats. The Warriors came within one run in the bottom of the seventh, but ended the game with a 6-5 loss after Cal State Stanislaus hit into a line drive double play.
In game two, Flora hit 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Corral was 1-for-3 with two RBI's.
The Warriors defense was strong in the second game with Flora holding down the left line and Brittany Rickles making more than one diving play, including diving for a line drive and turning the double play to record the second and third out for the Argonauts in the top of the third inning.
The Warriors will be back in action Saturday and Sunday for two doubleheaders as they resume conference play against the visiting Chico State Wildcats. First pitch is at noon both days.
