TURLOCK — Chico State has not played in three weeks, but instead of being rusty, the Wildcats seem rested as they swung the bat and took advantage of Stanislaus mistakes to win Sunday's doubleheader.

Cal State Stanislaus gave up 12 unearned runs in a 17-7 game one loss to Chico State then rebounded to play a solid game before dropping the nightcap, 5-1.

With the sweep, the Warriors loss for the sixth straight time after sweeping Humboldt State last Saturday. They are now 7-11 overall and 4-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Chico State, behind the arm of Sam Baker and 26 hits, improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the CCAA. In two games, Baker threw a total of 12 1/3 innings. She gave up two runs on seven hits with 24 strikeouts in the doubleheader.

Chico State last played on Feb. 6 at the Mizuno Best of the West Invitational here in Turlock. However, instead of being stale, the Wildcats came out swinging. Sam Quadt's double scored leadoff Britt Wright in the first and Chico threatened for more. Instead Stanislaus starter Brittani Weatherford was able to get out of it with just one Wildcat run.

In the second inning, however, Chico continued to apply pressure, but just as when Weatherford was about to get out of another bases loaded jam with two outs, a fielding error resulted in two runs and prolonged the inning. Chico catcher Hailey Stockman then hammered a three-run home run to deep left field for a five-run inning and a 6-0 lead.

The Wildcats would tagged on four more in the third for a 10-0 advantage — three of those runs were unearned. Diana Payan drove in two runs with a double to highlight that inning for Chico State.

Cal State Stanislaus would battle back and scored six unanswered runs to make it 10-6. Jordan Flora hit a two-out three-run double to left-center to give the Warriors three runs in the third. In the fourth, Missy Corral belted a two-out three-run homerun to right field to get CSUS back in the game.

"We had some miscues on the field and they capitalized, but I am pleased with how we stayed in and battled back even when we got down 10 so early," CSUS head coach Jan Schefkowitz said.

Chico State, however, didn't let up against the Warriors pitching. Stockman would homer again, this time a solo shot in the sixth. She also doubled in a run in the seventh inning, the same frame that Baker hit a two-run shot to left.

In the end, the Warriors committed five defensive errors and of the 17 runs Chico scored, only five runs were earned.

In the nightcap, it was a much closer game. Chico again got on board early with runs in the first three runnings for a 4-0 lead off freshman starter Kristan Burns.

Weatherford regrouped from game one and pitched a solid second game in relief of Burns. The sophomore ace threw 5 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on three hits with five strikeouts.

The only Stanislaus run came in the fifth on a Brittney Rickles double down the left field line that scored Weatherford, who picked up the team's first hit off Baker to start the fifth inning.

At the end of the day, Flora was the hitting star with two hits including her fourth home run of the season. She drove in four runs — all in the first game. Corral drove in three runs in game one while defensively threw out four would-be base stealers in the twinbill.

Stockman ended the day 5-for-7 with two homeruns, two doubles and six runs batted in. Rachel Failla was 4-for-5 with two doubles in the first game. Chico State scored 14 of its runs on the day in the first three innings.

These two teams will wrap up the four-game set on Monday wth first pitch at Noon.
