TURLOCK — The youth Cal State Stanislaus softball team grew up a lot just in one day at its own Mizuno Best of the West Invitational as the Warriors went 1-2 in three one-run games.

After dropping the opener with 16 strikeouts against Cal State San Marcos, the Warriors battled against two conference teams with split results.

"Each game that we play we have growth as a team. We have gained more poised in every game," head coach Jan Schefkowitz said.

The victory was a 4-3 win over San Francisco State behind a strong debut by freshman pitcher Kristan Burns in the second game of the day. The offense also showed up, scattering nine singles -- three of them by Sarah Locarnini.

Cal State San Marcos shut-down the Warriors offense in game one with a 1-0 win. The Cougars won three games on Saturday and scored a total of 25 runs. In the late game, Sonoma State rallied for two runs in its final at-bat to beat CSUS, 3-2.

"I am encouraged by the competitiveness of our team in general and in particular with Kristan (Burns) who battled in her colllegiate debut," Schefkowitz added. "Alyssa (Coehlo) also had a good debut and held Sonoma to one run. I am proud of their performances and know that there is a bright future for us."

In the win over SF State (1-2), Burns allowed three runs on six hits in the circle for the win. Stanislaus scored two runs in each of the third and fourth innings. In the third, the Warriors strung together four singles after two outs for two runs. Four more singles in the fourth also plated two runs, with RBIs by Brieanna Stone and Locarnini.

"(Weatherford) has shown tremendous growth from last year to this year and has great mound presence and will be a force to be content in our strong conference."

San Francisco State led 3-0 entering the third and was threatening to tie the score in the top of the seventh. With a runner at third and two outs, Burns got Gators' leadoff header Kendra Wood to weakly ground out to shortstop to end the game.

In the opener against Cal State San Marcos (4-0), the Warriors struck out 16 times after Locarnini led off the bottom of the first with a single. Brittani Weatherford got the loss after allowing a run on six hits. She struckout seven but walked six.

In the nightcap against Sonoma State, the Warriors had a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh with SSU as the home team. After going down quietly against reliever Weatherford with 11 straight retired, the Seawolves had four straight singles and used a key throwing error by the Warriors to score twice for the win.

Freshman pitcher Alyssa Coehlo made her debut against Sonoma State (2-1) and threw three innings and gave up just a run on four hits.

Locarnini went 6-for-9 for the day to lead the Warriors' offense.

The tournament concludes on Sunday with six more games. The Warriors play 11:15 a.m. against Dominican before squaring off with Chico State at 1:45 p.m.
