TURLOCK — Two great pitching performances and solid defense resulted in the Warriors going 2-0 on the final day of the Mizuno Best of West Invitational on Sunday.
Freshman pitcher
Kristan Burns pitched a gem in her second start of her career as the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors easily defeated Dominican, 11-1, in five innings in the first game on Sunday.
Not to be out-done, Warrior ace
Brittani Weatherford recorded a great outing herself in the finale as Stanislaus beat Chico State, 2-1, to finish 2-0 on the day and 3-2 for a successful weekend.
"I am just so pround of them. We have gotten better with every game this weekend," Warriors head coach
Jan Schefkowitz said. "Today we played with confidence in every position, offensively and defensively. We stuck together as a team and we look forward to a good season."
Burns, who made a solid debut on Saturday with a complete game victory, was one out away from a five-inning perfect game against the Penguins. Meanwhile, her teammates scored at will in the eight-run ruled game.
Cal State Stanislaus needed just eight hits -- including doubles by
Brittney Rickles and
Nicole Jenkins -- and capitalized on six Dominican errors to score all of those runs. The Warriors scored five-runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the run-rule in effect.
Sarah Locarnini, Alyssa Coehlo, Burns and Rickles each drove in two runs to lead the Warriors offense.
But it was Burns who again shined in the circle. She kept the ball down and recorded eight groundouts of the 15 outs. The freshman from Fairfield's Vanden High School was cruising along until two outs in the fifth when Robyn Ridpath reached on an error for Dominican's first baserunner.
Burns then hit the following batter and a single by Jill Rizo broke up the no-hit bid and the shutout, scoring Ridpath. Burns, who is from Biloxi, Mississippi, went to high school in Fairfield because her father is in the Air Force. She improved to 2-0 on the season by getting pinch hitter Emillie Feenan to strike out swinging to end the game.
The freshman starter went the distance on Saturday in the team's 4-3 win over San Francisco State.
The Warriors got on the board in the first inning with three runs on three hits on two errors.
In the game against Chico State, Weatherford spotted the Wildcats a run in the top of the first on two walks, a bunt and a sac fly. And that was all Chico State could get across.
Weatherford allowed a leadoff double in the third to Taylor Hanamaikai but left her standing at third. In the following inning, after another leadoff hit by Chico, Weatherford got two groundouts and a strikeout looking to end that threat.
In Chico's final at-bat, Wildcat's Rachel Failla reached on an error, but Weatherford struck out the next batter, got a pop-up and a fly out to end the game to earn her first win of the season.
The Warriors got on the board in the fourth after Locarnini ledoff with a double down the left field line. She moved to second on a hit by
Brieanna Stone and scored on a RBI single through the right side by
Vanessa Del Toro.
Cal State Stanislaus took the lead in the fifth with
Brittany Balanesi scored on a wild pitch. She started the inning with a single, stole second, move to third on a ground out.
Locarnini finished the tournament going 8-for-13 (.615 average) with five stolen bases.
The Warriors pitching staff, which also included freshman Alyssa Coehlo who started against Sonoma State Saturday night, posted a tournament-low 1.30 team earned run average.
