TURLOCK – After dropping a 4-0 loss in game one to Sonoma State, the Cal State Stanislaus softball team rebounded to defeat the Seawolves, 12-7, and take the split on day one of the conference series.
The Warriors are now 9-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, 12-14 overall. Sonoma State is now 13-5 in the CCAA and 17-8 overall.
Seawolves starter Samantha Lipperd threw a no-hitter against the Warriors in game one with 14 strikeouts. She walked three and hit a batter.
Brittani Weatherford held her own in the circle for four scoreless innings, but could not hold off the Sonoma State offense.
The nightcap started off with two Warrior walks and two Warriors being hit by by Seawolves pitcher, Julianne Martinez. The first run was scored by
Kiley Mendez after taking a ball off her back with the bases loaded.
Lauren Nagle then cleared the bases with a tirple to right-center field for a 4-0 lead.
In the third inning Sonoma State started to make contact off of Warrior starter
Kristan Burns. After giving up two runs off of two doubles and a single Stanislaus' lead dwindled to just three-runs, 6-3.
In the fourth Sonoma State kept their momentum and added fou unearned runs to take a 7-6 lead.
After a Sonoma pitching change the Warriors answered right back with two more walks by
Missy Corral and
Jordan Flora. With just one out, Mendez smashed a three-run homer over the left field fence to regain control of the game, 9-7.
The Warriors increased their lead by three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double by
Jordan Flora. Weatherford came in in the sixth to shutdown Sonoma to hold on for the win.
Flora led the Warriors hitting 2-for-3 with two runs and three runs batted in. Mendez was 1-for-2, including her second homer of the year, with two runs and five RBI's while Nagle finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.
Burns picked up the win to improve to 5-5 on the season. She allowed seven runs, but only three earned, on 10 hits in five innings.
The Warriors will take on Sonoma State in the second doubleheader of the series Saturday. First pitch is at noon.
