SEASIDE — The Cal State Stanislaus softball team got an unexpected strong pitching performance but could not string together hits on Monday in falling to Cal State Monterey Bay twice.
Alyssa Coelho threw a solid game in the circle in just her second collegiate start in Monday's nightcap, but the Warriors had just two hits in the 1-0 loss. CSUMB won game one 11-3 in five innings, largely due to six Warrior errors.
With the four-game series sweep, the Warriors dropped to 14-22 overall and 11-17 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Otters, CCAA regular season champions in 2010, improved to 11-12 in conference play and are 13-18 overall.
Prior to Monday's start, Coelho had appeared in just nine previous games with a total of 29 innings of work with a 7.54 ERA. She had made a start on Feb. 5 versus Sonoma State and lasted three innings.
But on Monday, the freshman from Hughson tried to help the Warriors avoid the series sweep after seeing the team get beat 11-3 in five innings earlier on the day with staff ace
Brittani Weatherford in the circle. Coelho gave up just the lone uneared run on three hits despite walking three and hit a batter in 5 2/3 innings.
Coelho got out of CSUMB rallies in every inning, including runners at second and third with two out situation in the fourth and getting a double play in the fifth.
CSUMB scored the only run in the third inning after a throwing error by the Warrior right fielder that resulted in Stevie Trevino, who was hit by a pitch to reach first, to score from second.
Sarah Locarnini had the team's only two hits in the nightcap off CSUMB pitcher Kylie Linnane, who struck out nine batters in the complete game win.
In game one, only four of the 11 runs scored by the Otters were earned by Weatherford as the Warriors were charged with six fielding errors.
Homeruns by CSUMB's Jackie Serna in the second and Angelina Orozco in the third helped the Otters build a 4-2 lead, but the fielding errors resulted in the other seven runs scored in the fourth and fifth innings to end the game in due to the 8-run mercy rule.
Stanislaus managed just two hits in the opener and neither hit came during the run-scoring innings. The Warriors got two runs on five walks and a wild pitch in the second inning. They plated a run in the fifth on a
Brieanna Stone fly ball to center that scored
Jordan Flora. Flora had reached on an error, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch.
Weatherford gave up 11 runs, only four earned, on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings of work. She struck out three but walked seven batters.
Cal State Stanislaus, now 5-12 in road games, will be happy to be home for the next two weekends. The Warriors are hosting the 22-team Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno starting on Friday. Tournament games are being played at Pedretti Sports Complex and Warrior Softball Field.
