TURLOCK — In an annual event where it's easier to name the teams not participating, a total of 22 softball teams will come together for the 10th annual Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno Sports, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus.
Out of the possible 26 NCAA Division II teams from the three West Region conferences, 22 teams are taking part in the tournament to be held at both the Pedretti Sports Complex and Warrior Softball Field on the campus of CSU Stanislaus.
Saint Martin's and BYU Hawaii are the only two full pledge Division II programs not involved. Two programs, Simon Fraser and Academy of Art, currently in their second year of candidacy for Division II are also absent.
Teams from the California Collegiate Athletic Association, Great Northwest Athletic Conference and the Pacific West Conference are divided up into four pools with each playing five pool play games on Friday and Saturday. Pool play standings will determine where teams are placed in five different championship brackets on Sunday.
In all, a total of 71 games will be played on five fields over three days starting at 8 a.m. Friday.
Sonoma State, defending CCAA conference tournament champion, won the 2010 Tournament of Champions. Grand Canyon won the silver bracket and Humboldt State captured the bronze bracket.
This year's tournament include three nationally ranked teams in No. 6 Western Washington, No. 16 UC San Diego and No. 22 Hawaii Pacific. Hawaii Pacific is the defending national champion.
