TURLOCK — In perhaps their best offensive showing in some time, the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors jumped all over Grand Canyon in a 10-2 win to wrap up pool play at the Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno.
The win followed an earlier narrow 2-1 loss to Montana State Billings which resulted in a 3-2 pool play record for the Warriors (17-24 overall). Where the Warriors fall in bracket play on Sunday is to be determined pending results of other games being played Saturday evening.
In the five-inning mercy rule win over Grand Canyon,
Sarah Locarnini went 2-for-2, drove in two runs and scored three times to lead the Warriors. Her two-run triple was part of a three-run Stanislaus inning that put the team up 9-2.
With four hits and two walks, the Warriors put up four runs in the second inning for a 6-1 lead.
Missy Corral doubled in a run and
Kiley Mendez had an RBI single in the rally. Corral also finished 2-for-2 in the game with a double and drove in two scores. Mendez was 2-for-3.
Starter
Kristan Burns only had to go three innings to pick up the win. She gave up just one earned run on four hits in three innings.
Alyssa Coelho allowed two hits in the final two innings.
In an earlier game, versus Montana State Billings, the Warriors mustered four hits in a close game. Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, Locarnini reached with a bunt single with one out and stole second. She then moved to third on a single by Corral. In an attempted double-steal with runners at the corners, Locarnini scored the tying run while Corral was tagged out at second.
The Yellowjackets, though, moved up ahead in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run by Meg Harasymczuk against starter Coelho.
Coehlo tossed five innings and gave up two runs on seven hits. She struck out three and walked none.
Cal State Stanislaus was playing without ace pitcher
Brittani Weatherford, who suffered an ankle sprain on Friday. She is out for the rest of the weekend.
