TURLOCK — Three Cal State Stanislaus seniors played in their final home match of the season Wednesday as they led the Warriors to a 6-3 win over Hawaii Hilo to complete regular season play.
The season finale marked the last dual match for seniors
Vanesa Reibstein,
Lexy Harrington and
Erin McGurty. Reibstein and Harrington have been part of the foundation of the women's tennis program since it was reinstated prior to the 2008-09 season while McGurty was a junior college transfer.
"They have been special for us in helping rebuild the program when we brought it back," said head coach
Verek Visaraga. "They will be missed and I am glad we were able to send them out on top with a win. We wish them the best luck in their future endeavors."
Wednesday's match wasn't the last competition for the Warriors, however, as they will compete at the Ojai Tournament next weekend to conclude the season. For the first time in three seasons, the Warriors are unlikely to advance to the NCAA West Regionals due largely in part to the smaller qualifying field for the West Region and the fact that women's tennis is no longer a CCAA sport for an automatic berth.
Cal State Stanislaus ends the regular season dual play with a 7-7 record. The Warriors are 7-3 against Division II in-region teams. Their only dual match losses were to nationally ranked teams in Las Vegas and twice to UC San Diego after opening the year with two matches against Division I foes.
Against the UHH Vulcans on Wednesday, the No.1 doubles team of
Verena Preikschas and
Katie Eng, the sixth ranked team in the nation, was again dominant. They took cared of their opponent in about 20 minutes with an 8-0 win to imporve to 9-4 on the season with a seven-match winning streak.
The No. 2 doubles team of Reibstein and
McKenzy Harden also picked up a point with an 8-4 victory of Janelle Ng and Lindsey Shin.
Preikschas and Eng, both juniors and have also been with the program since 2008-09, also won their singles matches. Preikschas improved to 11-3 in dual match play this season (and 47-13 in her career) after her 6-0, 6-1 win over Kelsey Daguio. Eng won at No. 3 singles over Janelle Ng, 6-1, 6-4, for her 40th career win.
Reibstein pulled out a battle in her first set against Stacey Grant with a 7-5 win before slamming set two with a 6-1 to close out her match at No. 2.
McGurty picked up the sixth point for Cal State Stanislaus with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6.
