TURLOCK – The Cal State Stanislaus Warriors battled hard against #9 UC San Diego, splitting Friday's doubleheader with a 2-1 loss in game one and a 3-2 win in the nightcap.
The Warriors are now 12-18 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 19-26 overall. The #9 Tritons are now 27-8 overall, 15-6 in conference play.
Brittani Weatherford was back in the circle for the Warriors for the first time since her ankle injury in last weekend''s Mizuno Tournament of Champions. Weatherford recorded both a win and a loss for the first day of play against the UC San Diego Tritons. In game one, she was relieved early after giving up a solo homerun to Triton's Kris Lesovsky in the third inning.
Weatherford bounced back in game two pitching a complete game with two runs on four hits.
Cal State Stanislaus took an early lead in the nightcap after Triton pitcher, Tess Granath, walked
Sarah Locarnini and
Missy Corral to start the game. With one down,
Kiley Mendez reached on a fielders choice bunt to the pitcher and advanced to second on an overthrow at home in attempt to stop Locarnini from scoring. Corral also scored on the throwing error by Granath at home.
Veronica Luna then wrapped up the Warriors three-run inning with a double to left field, scoring Mendez from second.
Weatherford and a crisp Warriors defense held the Tritons from scoring through six innings. UCSD's strong offense showed in the seventh when Jennifer De Fazio hit a two-out, two-run homerun into left field bringing the Tritons within one run of the Warriors. Lesovsky then hit a double to centerfield and advanced to third off of a wild pitch which raised San Diego's spirits, but Weatherford was able to force a third-out pop-up to end the game.
Although the Warriors were unable to capture the win in game one, they did not go without a fight. Facing the number one pitcher in the CCAA, Camille Gaito, Stanislaus was able to get five hits and threatened to tie the Tritons late in the game.
In the seventh inning
Veronica Luna led off with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the third baseman.
Vanessa Del Toro then hit an RBI double off of the top of the left-field wall, just inches from tying the game. Del Toro then advanced to third after Brittany Rickles grounded out to the first-baseman, but was unable to score because of a foul fly ball that ended the game.
Missy Corral led the Warriors on offense hitting 3-for-5 with one run. Del Toro finished 2-for-6 with an RBI.
The Warriors will wrap up their season series with UC San Diego in a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is at 11 a.m.
