TURLOCK — Errors were costly again for the Warriors as No. 9 ranked UC San Diego and its ace pitcher Camille Gaito picked up two more wins on Saturday.
The day started with two errors and ended with a fielding error in a tie game that led to a twinbill sweep by UC San Diego over Cal State Stanislaus, 7-2 and 6-4. The Warriors fall to 19-28 overall and 12-20 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play with one four-game set left to play after a bye-week.
UC San Diego continues to build its case in the regional rankings as it improved to 29-8 overall. The Tritons entered the weekend No. 2 in the West behind Western Washington. The pair of wins will keep UCSD atop of the conference standings at 17-6. Sonoma State (16-8) split at Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.
Missy Corral and
Vanessa Del Toro were the hitting stars for Stanislaus on Saturday with Corral belting a two-run homer to left that tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth inning of the finale.
The Warriors had let a 2-0 lead slip away with two more unearned runs in the second and third innings that put UCSD ahead 3-2. The Tritons tagged on a run in the fifth on a single by Ester Strom that scored Mya Romero who led off the inning with a double.
Corral ended up 3-for-4 with a double, a two-run home run and scored twice in the game. She also went 1-for-4 in game one. The senior catcher went 7-for-13 in the series to extend her hitting streak to nine games. Del Toro also hit safely in all four games this weekend after going 2-for-3 in both games of the Saturday twinbill.
Trailing 6-4 in their final at-bats the Warriors threatened by drawing a leadoff walk in the form of pinch-hitter
Lauren Nagle. After
Sarah Locarnini bunt Nagle over, Corral singled to left to set-up runners-at-the-corners one-out situation. Unfortunately, the heart of the Warrior lineup wasn't able to do any more damage with a pop-up and ground out to end the game.
The Warriors began the day on the wrong side defensively. In game one, after a leadoff single by UCSD's Kris Lesovsky, Stanislaus wasn't able to field two consecutive bunts to allow the Tritons to load the bases. A deep fly ball to right and a grounder to short quickly put Stanislaus down 2-0.
The Warriors didn't really recover from that first game and finished with five errors in the opener that resulted in three unearned runs. Two doubles highlighted a UCSD three-run fifth.
Stanislaus did get two runs back in the sixth on a two-run single by Del Toro that scored Corral and
Jordan Flora who both singled. However, against Gaito, the Warriors struck out 10 times, including three straight times in the second inning with the bases full and nobody out.
Gaito, though not untouchable as CSUS scattered nine hits in two games against her, improved to 21-1 on the season after earning a win in the second game pitching in relief. She ends the weekend with a 0.41 ERA.
In the end, the Warriors committed seven errors in two games that led to seven unearned runs.
All three Stanisalus pitchers saw action Saturday.
Brittani Weatherford, who lasted 3 2/3 innings in game one, started both games. She got the loss in the first game and
Alyssa Coelho was tagged with the loss in game two when she came in in the seventh inning.
