TURLOCK — Cal State L.A. saved Wally Goodline for the final game of the series and it worked out for the Golden Eagles as they defeated Cal State Stanislaus, 7-2, to avoid the sweep on Sunday.

Goodline threw eight strong innings and gave up just three hits to lead the Golden Eagles as they improved to 25-21 overall and 19-17 in the conference standings.

Ca State Stanislaus is now 23-18 overall and 15-17 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

The Warriors won their fourth conference series of the season with the doubleheader sweep on Saturday due to outstanding performances by starting pitchers in the first three games. On Sunday, however, Chris Short couldn't get out of the second inning as CSULA put up four runs.

After Short struck out the side in the first inning, a couple of bouncers went L.A.'s way in the second and the Golden Eagles cashed it in. Chad Nacapoy again keyed their rally with a double off the right field wall. David Compton drove in two scores and Michael Vinyard added another RBI single to cap the rally.

Warrior reliever Ryan Vander Tuig came in to shutdown the rally and he ended up holding L.A. down until the seventh. During that stretch, Vander Tuig retired 11 straight batters and kept Stanislaus within striking distance.

Stanislaus, however, couldn't get much going against Goodline. Goodline, who had been starting game one's of a series for Cal State L.A., ended up striking out seven and walked three to earn the win.

The Warriors finally picked up their first hit of the game in the sixth when David Contreras doubled down the left field line with one out. Goodline walked Kory Vitato but a ground out and a strikeout ended the inning with runners at second and third.

Trailing 7-0 in the ninth inning and facing Cal State L.A. reliever Jacob Valenzuela, the Warriors reserves finally help them get on the board.

After Thomas Shull drew an one-out walk, pinch hitter Garrett Wright singled off the third base bag. With two outs, pinch hitter John Canepa singled over the second baseman's reach to score Shull for the first run. Contreras then hit his second double of the day to right-center to score Wright from third.

Contreras finished with three of the team's six hits with two doubles. Cal State Stanislaus used five pitchers with Vander Tuig doing most of the work. He tossed 5 2/3 innings, gave up two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

The Warriors will travel to Chico on Tuesday for a make-up doubleheader. Next weekend's four-game set against San Francisco State will be the regular season finale for the Warriors. The middle two games of the series is here in Turlock on Saturday at noon.
