TURLOCK — Talk about dominating a match. That's exactly what the Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team did in Thursday night's season opener against Central Washington.
However, the Warriors were unfortunate to not be able to hit the back of the net in the 0-0 draw. The Warriors did hit the side of the net — a lot — as they out-shot the visiting Wildcats, 30-5 with nine shots-on-goal.
"That's about as lopsided a game you can play and not get a win," CSUS head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. "Give credit to Central Washington. They got in the way and really made it difficult to score."
Central Washington goalkeeper Kori Butterfield played a great match. The sophomore who allowed more than two goals per match last year, recorded eight saves — about six of them highlight-reel type saves to keep Stanislaus off the board.
The Warriors were on the attack early and often with chances after chances of all types. There were breakaways with shots going wide. Great give-and-go plays that were blocked or saved. Long bomb that sailed just high. Headers that found Butterfield's gloves.
In the two overtime periods, Stanislaus out-shot Central Washington 8-2 with six coming in the second OT. The Warriors also had 11 corner kicks to CWU's zero in the match.
"Overall we played well. We dominated in every aspect but just couldn't finish," Bolton added.
The Stanislaus defense held Central Washington to just five shots — none of them on goal — in 110 minutes of play.
Saturday night, Cal State Stanislaus will go at it again and hope to find the back of the net when it hosts Notre Dame de Namur. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Warrior Stadium.
