Box Score CHICO — Monday night's contest at Chico State's Acker Gym was very similar to last year's on the same court. Unfortunately for the Warriors, it was another final second heartbreaker loss for them as Chico State edged Cal State Stanislaus, 63-59.
The Warriors, held to under 60 points for the first time this season, fell to 7-3 overall and 3-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State Stanislaus shot much-better than the Wildcats, but Chico State out-rebounded the Warriors with many second-chance shots to pull ahead.
Chico State, with Josh Jackson hitting four key free throws in the final 11 seconds of the game, improved to 9-3 overall and 3-3 in the CCAA. The Wildcats split the season series with the win with the help of Sean Park, who scored 16 points.
Reggie Jones led Cal State Stanislaus with 17 points and five rebounds.
Brett Sayad and
Dan Daviess scored 12 each. Sayad led the team with six rebounds.
The Warriors led by as many as 10 points early but it was a see-saw battle for a majority of the game, especailly in the second half.
After Chico State built a five-point lead on a Jordan Semple three-pointer with 3:45 left, Sayad converted on an And-1 three-point play and Jones's jumper at 2:35 tie the game at 57-57.
Park made a layup before a
Ronnie Sawyer free throw to set up the four heroic free throws by Jackson in the final 11 seconds to lift Chico. After Jackson put Chico up by three, the Wildcats elected to foul the Warriors.
Sam Marcus made one of two to get within two, but CSUS obtained the ball after a Wildcat pulled the rebound but stepped out of bounds.
After a timeout, a short jumper by VInce Fuller to tie the game fell short with the rebound controlled by Jackson, who was fouled. Jackson, a career 40 percent free throw shooter, made two more freebies for the final score.
Cal State Stanislaus out-shot the Wildcats, 46.2 to 33.3 percent for the game, but Chico State took 63 total attempts. Chico State out-rebounded CSUS 48-27 with 25 offensive rebounds.
Normally a great free throw shooting team, the Warriors were just 6 for 12 for 50 percent. Jones did not have a foul shot attempt.
The Warriors will host a pair of CCAA games this weekend at Fitzpatrick Arena with UC San Diego visiting on Friday. Cal State San Bernardino is their opponent on Saturday.
