Box Score TURLOCK — It took two extra periods of hard-fough battle of basketball, but in the end Humboldt State escaped with a win, 85-81, over Cal State Stanislaus Friday night.
After HSU's Scott Clark made a three-pointer with 27 seconds left to play, the Lumberjacks made three of four free throws to break the hearts of the loud and active crowd at Fitzpatrick Arena. Humboldt State improved to 13-4 overall and 9-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Lumberjacks extend their win-streak to six games, four of those came on the road.
For the Warriors, it was another tough loss at home as they fell to 11-6 overall and 7-6 in conference play. Cal State Stanislaus held a 14-point lead five minutes into the second half. The Warriors also scored the first six points on two three-pointers to start the final overtime period.
Reggie Jones, who didn't have his best night shooting from the floor, still managed to finish with 21 points. He was 5 for 17 shooting and made 11 of 14 free throws. Jones also added four blocked shots and pulled 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double.
Brett Sayad had three three-pointers and finished with 17 points. It was his trey that followed
Clinton Tremelling's three-pointer that started the final extra period to give Stanislaus a six-point lead that disappeared. After
Sam Marcus made a layup at 3:15 to give the Warriors their second six-point advantage in the second OT, the Warriors scored three free throws the rest of the way.
Near the end of regulation, it was
Dan Daviess' layup and a Jones free throw with 31 ticks left that sent the game into the extra session.
Jones again had a shot at winning the game for Stanislaus with two more tries at the foul line with 26 seconds left in the first overtime. He missed his second to keep the score at 70-70, sending the game to a second OT.
Humboldt State made nine three-pointers on the night, many were open looks that helped the Jacks rally in the second half. Cal State Stanislaus had a 14-point, 40-26, lead at 15:16, but a 10-2 HSU run made it 42-38 to set up the close finish.
HSU was led by Austin Bryan's 22 points off the bench. Clark and Kyle Baxter each had 16. Leading scorer Brandon Sperling was held to nine points.
Ronnie Sawyer also turned in a double-double performance with 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Warriors. Daviess had 12 points.
Sam Marcus was credited with nine assists and four steals.
The Warriors host Sonoma State Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. on Coaches vs. Cancer Night. Sonoma State was victorious at Chico Friday, 62-59.
