Box Score TURLOCK — Saturday night's men's basketball game came down to the final seconds again. Disappointingly, the Warriors let another game slip through their hands in a 73-69 loss to Sonoma State.
The Warriors got the turnover they needed with 10 seconds left to play. Then they got a Seawolve miss free throw with seven ticks left. Both situations played out against Cal State Stanislaus as it dropped two key home games this weekend to fall to 11-7 overall and 7-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
With the two narrow setbacks, instead of making a move up the conference standings, the Warriors now found themselves clinging on to eighth place. Only the top eight teams qualify for the CCAA postseason tournament in March.
Sonoma State is perhaps the hottest team in the CCAA right now as the Seawolves have gone 6-1 in their last seven games. SSU improved to 10-8 overall and 8-6 in league play.
In a game that saw 17 ties, it was anybody's contest in the final moments. After Steven Pratt made two free throws -- he was 9 for 10 from the line -- to put Sonoma up by three,
Reggie Jones answered with a layup with 44 seconds left to made it a one-point game.
Deteremined to run as many seconds off the clock as possible, Sonoma State danced around the primary until
Ronnie Sawyer stripped the ball from Sterling Arterberry with 10 seconds left to play. From the half court line, Sawyer saw a streaking
Sam Marcus in front of the Stanislaus bench. Attempting to get a fast-break score, Sawyer sailed the pass well over Marcus out of bounds to give SSU the rock.
Still with a one-point game, Pratt got a chance at the line again, but he missed his second attempt with seven seconds left. However, the ball ended up in Pratt's hands after a scramble with four-tenths of a second left to play. Pratt made both freebies this time to seal the game.
Dan Daviess' three pointer with 1:22 left iin the first half gave Stanislaus its first biggest lead at 28-19. The Warriors took a 30-23 lead at halftime. But Sonoma State out-scored the Warriors 50-39 in the second half.
In the end, Jones finished with 19 points and 9 rebounds to lead all players. Jones also had five assists and two blocked-shots.
Donald Gaines scored 12 points and
Ronnie Sawyer had 10 -- both off the bench. Stanislaus got 24 points off the bench versus SSU's seven.
Four Seawolves scored in double-digits with Arterberry netting 17. Will Olsem and Justin Herold each had 15 and Pratt finished with 13. Pratt also had 12 assists, three of them came on three consecutive three-pointers by Sonoma State to start the second half.
