This Week
Cal State Stanislaus begins a four-game homestand this week with a pair of CCAA games. The Warriors host UC San Diego Friday and Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.
This Week's Opponents
Friday, Jan. 6, 7:30 p.m.
vs. UC San Diego TRITONS (5-6, 1-5 CCAA)
Series Notes: UC San Diego holds a tiny, 16-15, edge over the Warriors in the all-time series (13-9 in CCAA play). Cal State Stanislaus, however, won both games in 2010-11 after a 9-game skid against the Tritons.
The Last Time We Met... was on Feb. 10, 2011, in Stanislaus win, 71-66, in La Jolla.
Reggie Jones and
Evan Scott each scored 18 points and combined for eight blocked-shots to lead the Warriors.
About the Tritons: UC San Diego split their last CCAA weekend at home with a win over SF State before losing to undefeated Cal Poly Pomona … Christian Hatch leads UCSD with 14.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game … Tyler McGrath and Mike Meza are the outside shooters, each with 21 three-pointers … UC San Diego is 0-3 in CCAA road games.
Saturday, Jan. 7, 7:30 p.m.
vs. Cal State San Bernardino COYOTES (6-3, 5-1 CCAA)
Series Notes: The Coyotes hold a 26-7 all-time advantage over Cal State Stanislaus. They are also 21-5 during CCAA games … The Warriors are 1-9 in the last 10 meetings. The win came on Jan. 3, 2010,
Larry Reynolds' first game against his former team.
The Last Time We Met... was on Feb. 18, 2011, in Turlock. CSU San Bernardino won 69-56 despite 29 points from
Reggie Jones. Jones was 10-for-10 from the foul line in that game.
About the Coyotes: Cal State San Bernardino fell to Cal Poly Pomona in overtime (85-76) at home last Thursday … The Coyotes are 3-0 in CCAA road games … Theron Laudermill averages 13.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.6 blocked-shots per game … CSUSB leads the conference with 5.0 blocked shots per game.
Another Close Game at Chico State
It came down to the final seconds once more against the Wildcats of Chico State, but the Warriors dropped a tight game at Acker Gym, 63-59, on Monday. Chico's Josh Jackson made four free throws in the final 11 seconds and the Warriors' final attempt was short in the loss. This was similar to the last time the teams met in Chico a year ago, as well as the game earlier this season in Turlock (a Stanislaus win in overtime).
Upcoming Home Games
The Warriors will be able to enjoy the home court for four straight games. They will also be home at Fitzpatrick Arena for eight of the next 10 games. This, hopefully, will be the time for the Warriors to make a run up the CCAA Standings as they have a better record at home. Since 1998, the Warriors are 88-82 in Turlock and 44-125 on the road.
Off to Best Start
The 7-3 start equals the best record after 10 games for the Warriors during the CCAA era. The 2000-01 team also started 7-3 before dropping three straight. The 2006-07 team was 7-4 after 11 games.
Reggie Continues to Lead
Reggie Jones scored 17 points on Monday after a double-double last Thursday against Dominican (24 points, 10 rebounds) as he continues to lead the CCAA in scoring. Jones now averages 19.0 points per game. He also pulls 6.4 boards per contest.
The Rebounding Game
In case you are wondering, the return of 6-foot-11
Frank Monge has not made much of a difference in rebounding, at least statistically. In the six games before Monge, the Warriors averaged 33 rebounds per game (35.5 for opponents). In the four games since his return, the Warriors also averaged 33 rebounds per game (36 for opponents).
There's Always Time for Firsts
Many “firsts” happened for the Warriors, negatively, in Monday's loss at Chico State. For the first time this season the Warriors lost a game when they led at halftime and with five minutes left to play. They also lost for the first time when out-shooting opponents.
Speaking of Out-Shooting Opponents
The Warriors have out-shot opponents nine out of 10 games and have shot 40 percent or better in all 10 games. As a team, the Warriors made 47.5 percent of their field goal attempts.
Reggie Jones (.606) and
Donald Gaines (.574) are among CCAA leaders.
Missing from the Line
Stanislaus is also one of the best free throw shooting teams in the conference (ranks first with .772 percent entering the week), but in Monday's loss, the Warriors attempted just 12 free throws and made just six of them.
Reggie Jones, who is 50-for-63 for the season, did not have a single free throw attempt.
Head Coach Larry Reynolds
Larry Reynolds is in his third season as the Warriors' head coach. In his first season, the Warriors went 10-17, the first-10-win season since a 13-16 mark in 2006-07. Reynolds came to Cal State Stanislaus after leading Long Beach State to a NCAA tournament appearance in 2006-07 when the 49ers went 24-8. As a Division II coach at Cal State San Bernardino from 1997 to 2002, Reynolds posted a 110-35 overall record. Under Reynolds, CSUSB won three CCAA titles, two regional championships and made four NCAA tournament appearances. Reynolds was named CCAA coach of the year four times and was the west region coach of the year in 1998-99 following the Coyotes' West Region championship.
Fitzpatrick Arena
Warrior Arena was renamed Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena at the start the 2010-11 season. The arena is named for Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick, owners of Valley Lexus/Valley BMW in Modesto and other car dealerships in the Bay Area. The Fitzpatricks have been long-time supporters of California State University Stanislaus. The gym has been named Warrior Arena since 1999, 21 years after it was built.
CCAA Basketball Championships
The 2012 CCAA Men's & Women's Basketball Championship tournament will be held at the beginning of March. Eight teams qualify for the event with first round games on campus site Feb. 28. The four winners will advance to the semifinals and finals, March 2-3, in La Jolla on the campus of UC San Diego. The winner of the tournament would receive the automatic bid for the NCAA tournament.
