TURLOCK — On a night when not many shots were going through the net, the Warriors took advantage of their free chances. In the end, Cal State Stanislaus was victorious with a 78-72 overtime win over UC San Diego, Friday night.
Reggie Jones notched a career-high with 31 points despite being shutout for most of the second half to propell the Warriors to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Jones, who scored 14 of his points from the free throw line, also tied a personal-high 14 rebounds for his fourth double-double. After scoring 16 points in the first half, Jones was held without a score until 7:01 in the second half. He nailed a triple to give the Warriors a 48-45 lead at the time before going on to make four free throws for seven second half points.
Brett Sayad had a double-double as well with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Ronnie Sawyer scored 11 points, pulled eight rebounds with two blocked shots and three steals. Freshman
Clinton Tremelling had his best game thus far with 11 points in 20 minutes off the bench.
Appearently for the opposition, the way to stop Jones was to double- and triple-team him with physical play --- and hope that the referees don't call fouls. That happened a lot Friday night against Jones even though the game saw a total of 47 fouls.
UC San Diego, now 5-7 overall and 1-6 in the CCAA, was called on 31 fouls and sent Stanislaus to the line for 45 free throw attempts. The Warriors, one of the better free throw shooting teams in the CCAA with a 75.8 percent average, converted on 33 total freebies for 73.3 percent.
Trailing by three with 2:11 left to play in regulation, it was Jones' three free throws during separate trips to the line that tied the game, for the sixth time, at 57 apiece with 52 ticks left. After a UCSD free throw by Ryan Peters with 20 seconds left, Jones had a chance for the win as he was sent to the line for two with four to play. Jones made the second attempt to tie at 58-58 to sent the game into overtime.
In OT, Jones made the biggest bucket with a three-pointer at 2:02 left for a five-point lead. Even though UCSD answered with a trey, the Warriors gained momentum and again capitalized on its tries at the foul line. Stanislaus would go 8-for-12 from the free throw line in the final 81 seconds of the extra period to seal the win.
As a team, the Warriors had its worst shooting night this season hitting on just 17 of 57 field goal attempts (29.8 percent). Stanislaus made just five shots in the second half (5-for-20 for 20 percent), but only needed to go 2-for-4 in OT.
A huge improvement from Monday's loss at Chico State was the rebounding game. Friday night, the Warriors out-rebounded UCSD, 46-29 and held the Tritons to just two offensive rebounds. Chico State had 25 O-boards.
Tyler McGrath led UC San Diego with 19 points and Mike Meza scored 15 before becoming the third Triton to foul out of the game. Christian Hatch, UCSD's top scorer at 14.8 points per game, was held to 4 for
13 shooting for nine points.
Cal State San Bernardino (6-4, 5-2 CCAA), the Warriors' opponent on Saturday, lost at Chico State, 63-56.
