Box Score LA JOLLA — Make it two-in-a-row for Apryl Whitney. The Warriors got a late score by the redshirt junior as they defeated No. 12 UC San Diego, 1-0, Friday in a crucial match.

Whitney scored in the 87th minute as the 20th ranked Warriors improved to 13-2 overall, 9-2 in the CCAA North. Cal State Stanislaus also stayed undefeated on the road at 8-0 this season. The victory is the Warriors' first at UC San Diego in their sixth try since UCSD begin play in the CCAA in 2000.

"I'm extremely proud of how we played this match. We were extremely motivated and it showed in our effort and energy," head coach Gabriel Bolton said. "We had to remind ourselves this week that you have to do the little things to win. It doesn't just happen."

The match had major implications in the conference standings and the regional rankings. The Warriors entered the week second in the CCAA North and ranked No. 6 in the NCAA West Region. Sonoma State leads the CCAA North and is No. 1 in the West.

Sonoma State, ranked No. 5 in this week's NSCAA national poll, lost at Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0, Friday night. Sonoma State now leads the Warriors by just one point (28-27) points in the CCAA North Standings.

Whitney has now scored two consecutive goals for the Warriors. She scored the second goal in last Sunday's game against Cal Poly Pomona. Like Sunday's score, Whitney's 25-foot blast on Friday was also assisted by Emily Relles. Relles, the assist leader in the CCAA, now has 11.

"Apryl hit an absolute bomb into the upper V. It was absolutely perfect," Bolton said.

UC San Diego (10-2-2, 8-2-2 CCAA) and the Warriors were locked in a defensive match as expected. The Warriors took 11 shots with five on frame, the Tritons 12 shots with six on frame.

Stanislaus goalkeeper Millie Brown picked up six saves for her eighth shutout this season.

"Our total commitment to defending really showed tonight. The effort by all of our players defensively was incredible," Bolton added. "Just because you are committed to defending doesn't mean you can't play attractive attacking soccer once you get the ball. We were able to create ample chances though out the match."

The Warriors will try and conclude the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record in away contests on Sunday with a match at Cal State San Bernardino.
